Default Adjusting for Dampening and Preload

I want to start tuning my suspension for my bike, but I'm not sure exactly what safe progression techniques there are.

With my car, i have the front dampers set at "2" stiffness (1 being softest and 8 being hardest). I set the rear dampers to "4" to try and recover from the body roll. I have the rear sway bar set pretty stiff also. I understand how cars work. I also understand that if something isn't tweaked right that the car may not respond right. Being on two wheels I don't feel like I want to experiment hard corners without any real knowledge of how bikes should be set up. Rally cars are set up completely backwards from my steet car, so this leaves me to believe that a bike could be set COMPLETELY different than I may think.

If anyone has a good technique to follow or sets in which these 2004 GSXR 600's should be set up please let me know.
