| Third gear and cruising ![]() | I've read the break in guidelines and it says that after 500 miles to perform the first service. I've got 550 miles on it and the service has been scheduled for sept. 9 (that's the earliest and it was included in my extended warranty). I'm thinking that it might have close to 900 miles on it by then. Is that real bad for the long term outlook? I mean will it damage it if i keep riding here and there, or am I being anal?

| The 1st Oil change is the most important, you won't Damage it, but the oil right now in both the engine and Trans has shavings in it (this is normal) from break-in. You will notice the bike will be a lot happier when this is done. Besides the oil change a general going over is done to check bolts, cables, etc. Don't blow off any service work. |

| Third gear and cruising ![]() | Im all about doing things that need to be done. I mean its a race bike. It takes more care, attention, and most imporantly-money. I got no qualms about that. But if I ride to 800 miles while waiting till next fri, will it be cool?

| Third gear and cruising ![]() | honestly, because it's already paid for. why should i change it if they are going to change it and everything is ok for the next 300 miles. ill be changing it after my first and second service.

| I'd hit my first service on time! Like stated above, "it is your most important service." Look at it this way, if you cut your finger to the point that its about to fall off would you say I'll keep working a few more days before I go seek medical attention? (just an example) If you plan on keepin' it a while & running it hard later you'd better take heed to the 500 mile maintenance. It'll bite you in the long run. I had a buddy that ran his "extremely hard" when he first got it & exceeded recommended rpms during break-in. Guess what...his engine went out at 3,400 miles. Just sharing a bit of info w/ya! It's your call, best of luck in whatever you decide.

| DaMan, it's your bike, and I'm no mechanic, but if you have alternative transportation to work, I'd save as many miles as I could for fun, and try not to exceed the recommended mileages in the service chart. Will it hurt to exceed them? Probably not. If (God forbid) the bike breaks down next month, will you always wonder if the extended mileage was to blame? Probably so, depending on what goes (again, God forbid). If you have to do your own oil change the first time, I'm sure the stealership will just postpone the free oil change. Most are pretty good about something like that. Like I said, it probably won't amount to a hill of beans either way, I just htought I'd throw some stuff out there. |

| Third gear and cruising ![]() | thanx for the info. i called the service manager at the dealer and he said it wouldnt hurt it so long as i dont run it hard. i broke it in exactly the way the manual said to. at about 520 miles i tasted life above 7000 rpm's. it was insane! i have to ride while its nice, but ill take it easy. thanks again

| Change the oil yourself. Its cheap and easy. Then when you bring it in for the service maintenance let them know you changed it, and if they want to AGAIN that they can. I'm not completely sure what they do other than change your oil for the first one but I think they check bolts and other fluids to make sure everything is safe. (I did the same thing. I got to 450 miles, and they couldnt service it for a week. I got up to 700 or so until I was taken in, and my bike runs great with almost 4,000 on it now).
