|  Ducati rear wheel; how does it work? Going out to lunch today I just saw a Ducati with the strangest rear wheel setup I had ever seen. It was only connected on 1 side! The other side of the rear wheel wasn't connected to anything. Totally open! It gave the bike an incredible light and sporty look to it. I would think that such an arrangement would not hold up well. Does it? It sure was neat looking! |

| Ducati's rear swing arm, along with it's unique, undertail exhaust was exclusively designed for racing. The exhaust was designed with aerodynamics in mind, and the swing arm was designed for an easy tire swap out in the pits.

| of course its safe...your CAR wheels are only connected on one side right ?

| Connecting to a wheel on one side and trying to transfer all your vertical and horizontal forces to it just means your bearings and your axel need to be more robust than if you had forks to spread the load to each side of the wheel. No reason why it can't work the same. Now, if you shifted the center of gravity of your bike off of the centerline of the wheels, that would make things very interesting... GL riding.

| They'll all have it soon enough. Same with the under seat exhaust, etc. They are beginning to look a lot alike, and that is expected as manufacturers borrow the best in technology from each other. Soon the only thing seperating them will be name and colour!

 | It is perfectly safe but the swing arm does not get the same amount of flex as a 2 sided one which is why Ducati went back to the more practical swingarm in their WSB models. Safer and faster.
