I'm not positive, but I thought I saw a statistic somewhere on the news that stated that the majority of motorcycle accidents happened to male riders age 40 and older, while riding cruiser/sport cruiser? I may be wrong on this, but I thought I'd ask how true that statistic is (or if it is even the correct statistic).

After re-reading what I wrote, I can see where it could be interpreted as hostile. My mistake. I've been . . . not well lately.

True but you have to take into consideration that the over 40 group is the biggest group out there by a wide margin. The question is, is the accident rate for the 40+ crowd proportionate to their numbers ? Answer is, no it isn't, it's lower than all other groups.

If you have a thousand green men, a hundred blue men and 10 purple men and 50% of each group has been in an accident you can't just spout that green men have one hundred times more accidents than purple men!!!! ( 50% of 1,000= 500, 50% of 10=5, so 500/5=100 )

The statistically correct number to take into account is the probability of any one individual within an age group to be involved in an acident, not the total number of accidents without taking into consideration the size of the group.

Luckily, insurance companies do take this into account and charge this age group lower rates than younger riders. This alone should be an indicator that older riders have a lesser chance of being involved in an accident.

Just checked in to the NHTSA site for some info, again it all comes down to what is the most newsworthy spin to put on the information.

For 2006, bike fatalities for the under 30 age group are 1,527 for the 30 to 39 age group it's 1,002 and for the over 40 group it's 2,279. So by my calculations it's the under 40 riders that have more fatal accidents.

Least they could do is be more precise in their reporting of the information. Why not a <20 group, why no 40-50 group,50-60 group, etc......

Ok, thanks for the correction. I thought that when I heard that on the news, something was fishy. Yes, a 25 year old rider does (in most cases) have better reflexes and physical abilities, but anyone over 40 usually has more experience and knows how to avoid an accident better. And when avoiding an accident isn't going to happen, a more experienced rider knows how to handle an accident better, and I'm pretty sure that's why the fatality rate is lower. Thanks again for the correction.

Natural selection has pretty much weeded out the bad riders by the time their peers reach 40.lol

I originally wanted an r6. Cheapest I found at 19 years of age was like 500 dollars a month. My cruiser is about 80 a month. I am glad I got it instead though.

Wow, that's the lowes rate I have ever heard of a 19 year old paying for any motorcycle, let alone a sport bike. Way to go
Are you sure that's a yearly rate, and not monthly? I understand it's just liability, but that's still a way low rate.

$84's a year for my 1982 MB5

Liability only...

Progressive queted me at $300, but my dad has 2-3 cars, his Harley and now my bike all with Farmer's, which is probably why its a pretty significantly lower number...
