Default Bandits - Why so many......

Why are there so many Bandit 1200's for sale, and very few NICE 600's? I've been watching, but see a 10:1 ratio of 1200's to 600's. Did they just sell that many more 1200's, or do people just keep the 600's?

They don't make the 600 anymore, and IMHO it is a superb bike. An all-around great machine for touring, cornering or just going to the store.

Also, they just came out with the new Bandit 1250's, so maybe a lot of folks are trading up. THe new one has some nice options that aren't on the old design.

I'm looking for a good 600 as an option for my first bike. The short list is looking like SV650 (not S), Bandit 600, FZ6, Honda 599, Ninja 650R. I just found one 600 at a dealer, but it was thrashed, for $4,000. I don't think so!

Are you watching Craigslist? Cycletrader? Ebay? There should be a million nice bikes in your area.

I have searching Craigslist down to a science. I'm there 3 times a day usually. Ebay is tough. It seems that 90% of the bike there are east coast, and I'm not buying it sight-unseen. And I do poke around Cycletrader on a fairly regular basis.

I'd have thought California to be a goldmine of bikes.

I'd take this piece.

eBay Motors: Yamaha : FZR600 FZR 600 (item 110178415694 end time Oct-14-07 13:14:13 PDT)

Note...they're not Bandit. Yet they are very worthy substitutes if you are looking for a cheap sport/sport standard to pickup and see the other side of motorcycling life.

Being my first bike, I'm afraid of a restoration project. I'm mechanically inclined OK, and have built several cars, but had something to drive while I did it. I'd like to have a bike ready to go...then tinker on something else if necessary. However, at $350 currently........and North Hollywood is CLOSE!

I've steered away from the FZR because of the "R". So "R" is not as bad as "RR"? I like the upright seating position of the standards. Does the FZR lay you over much. I can handle some, but don't want to be laying on the tank.

How many miles are "too many" for a used bike? I know it depends on how it's been maintained, and sometimes you just never know, however, assuming it has been maintained well, not abused, etc....

Thank you all very much for your help and insights. I really do appreciate it.

I'd try to stay under 20,000 or so. Any more than that and you're looking at suspension bearings, wheel bearings, brakes, etc., etc. I think the FZR is more along the lines of a Katana, or a faired sporty standard.

They still DO make a Bandit 650, they just don't sell it in the USA any more!

Yes, a plethora of hidden damage. Copious quantities of crashed cycles.

Well, since the east coast is too far, I'm guessing the midwest is also too far, but there is a nice looking 400cc Bandit on eBay. However bidding will end at around 2pm EDT today.

That's a pretty clean bike. You think it's worth that kind of coin? It seems to me that it's getting pretty close to the limit.

Very nice looking bike!

(The Eighties called. They want their wheels back!)

Someone else chime in here, but weren't the Bandit 400's a little suspect in their reliability? Or am I wrong?
