you could also try the 500 ninja. yeah it is smaller than the 650 ninja but if you are looking for a bike that loves corners the 500 is nicely balanced machine. i have almost 4000 miles on my 07 and i love ever single mile i have put on it

The Ninja 500 is a great starter bike that does handle pretty well but don't get one if you already have riding expirience.

I had one before I got my SV650 and the SV is superior in every way. It has more power, its lighter, it handles better and it has better brakes...

The 500 is cheaper and does get better gas milage though...

Any of those listed should be totally managable. The FZ6 is going to be the fastest of the bunch unless you go with the bigger Bandit or the FZ1, which I don't really recommend.

One note, you need to pay attention to the engine type. The SV650 is going to be a twin like you're used to, but something like the FZ6 is going to be an inline 4. Those engines are going to feel positively anemic off the line compared to your Dyna, but they'll rev MUCH higher and there's tons of power up above the 7k rpm mark. Something like the FZ6 is going to feel slow to you off a stop, but crazy fast after you rev it up. It's just a different riding style that you'll have to get used to. Twins like the SV650 and the Ninja 650 will be a little more like you're used to, but they'll still rev higher and give you a lot more power at the top-end than you're used to.

Also, be aware that the SV650S (the version with the fairing) has a more leaned-forward riding position that some of the other bikes you listed like the FZ6 and Ninja 650.

It sounds like you're looking in the right ballpark checking out the middle-weight sport tourers. They should all be totally managable for you, but different and sporty enough to put a great big grin on your face.

I read an in depth test article last night, and now, I'm it's biggest cheerleader.

I didn't realize what a value per dollar that bike is. I challenge anyone to come up with a spec sheet like that bike has for the price $7999 to start. Hell, even the Bandit 1250 is more expensive, but the 675 makes damn near the same horsepower. Hell it makes damn near as much hp as it's bigger brother (the Speed Triple 1050), but of course that is maxed out W.O.T. where most of us will never use it on the street.

And of course, it's a couple a thousand less than it's bigger brother. Until I read otherwise, it's got my vote. Certainly not for a beginner bike, but it's got entry level pricing, and packs a hell of a wallop.

I'm with you, Tim. I was hesitant to consider a 1050 because the feel was so close to the Bandit. That new ST, however... yumm.

Yeah...my interest is definitely piqued on the ST.

Of course, so is the Tiger, Speed, Daytona, etc!!!

I may have to see what I can finagle down at the Triumph dealer and get some seat time so I can post some riding impressions. I kinda abandoned that quest I had in the spring when I ended up buying the Uly.

my wife has recently bought a Kawasaki 650 and i must say i like it for long trips and just rolling around town. It has enough power to give you a little kick in the pants but not over or under powered. Highly recommended even though i have not rode any of the other options.
