Default Be careful what you wish for

Well, I finally got my bike nice and quiet. Since I bought the bike I was annoyed by how loud it was. Replacing the muffler was cost prohibitive, and properly fixing the existing muffler turned out to be impossible (can'
t get the required part).

Finally someone on this forum suggested that I just place packing material in the open cavety that is my muffler. It worked like a charm! It might not last, but its nice and quiet now. Just the way I wanted it.

The problem is that now the bike feels powerless. Upto 5,000 RPM, the bike runs as it did before, nice but tame. Above 5,000 RPM, the bike used to turn into a monster. The power came on stong and heavy and would give a real kick in the pants. Above 5,000 RPM the bike acted like a totally different machine, a real monster. Almost as if the motor was turbocharged and the turbo kicked in.

Unfortunately, now with the packed muffler the monster is gone. Now, it just pulls with the same as it did under 5,000 miles. If I never felt that power I wouldn't miss it, but having felt it, now I miss it!

Now my delima is should I trade noise for power. I'll leave the muffler packed for a few weeks and see if I can be happy without the power. I sure enjoy the quieter ride!
