Default Steering Damper...???

I have a question for the board "experts"

Is a steering damper (top mount & adjustable) an unnecessary expense? I want to get one (not a top of the line though), but friends keep saying that it's not necessary since Suzuki's have dampers already - ok Duh! However, my reason for wanting one that is adjustable while riding, is thanks to a "scare" I got on a really bad road. It was all half constructed, but with deep groves, cracks, etc. I felt like my bike was being used as a jack hammer. After my 1-second thought of "Oh no!", I throttled it up, and kind of skimmed over the rest.

So my question is WOULD a top mounted adjustable damper have helped in that situation, or is it just not worth the expense? I've never used one before, and I don't know anyone who uses one, so perhaps some of you do.

Thanks!
