| HI, I have bought my new wife's son (17 and his first bike) a 2001 600 Katana and he has modified the bike and I want to know if this modification will cause any harm. What he has done!!!! Sitting on the bike on the right side he has cut into the Oil line going into the oil cooler and put in a tee value to let the Oil flow thru. the value is a three sided tee value. two sides is where he reconnected so the oil will flow thru and the 3rd side which makes it a tee he has connected a sensor to sense the oil temperature and has mounted a fan(wire running from fan back to the tee value) in front of the oil cooler and the engine ,trying to blow more air onto the oil cooler and engine. He is trying to get the temperature of the oil to cut the fan off and On. For what reasons I'm unsure. The value i'm trying to explain is a tee type value. The top of the tee value is where he has mounted the sensor to sense the oil temperature and the the long side is where he reconneted the oil lines. I hope i've explained this right. I'm 62 and have owned motorcycles for 32 years but I've never been involved in a sport bike or tried to alter one in this way. The question is, Will this value he has installed cause back pressure of any kind or oil flowing problems of any kind and or any oil pressure problems. Does any one know of someone who has done this to their bike. I don't want him to harm the bike's engine before he starts. Does any of the Katana's have an oil temperature problem or cooling problems. If i have not explained this proper please let me know and I will try to do a better job. All comments will be appreciated. Thanks Tom Last edited by tkorney777; 04-23-2007 at 06:11 PM. Reason: wording |

| Is it a valve or just a tee? Only you can determine whether it's restricting flow or not. If not, he probably can't hurt anything. The only possible reason he'd need a fan setup like that is if he sits in traffic on hot days. I own a similar bike and have ridden in 90 degree weather through road construction. It's not a problem. If you're sitting for more than 60 seconds, you shut the bike off. I must also question why you'd buy a teenager a motorcycle. On second thought, I don't want to know. Welcome to M-J.

| ... ![]() | depending on how the oil lines are secured to the T, it might not hold together for long. i assume that this is a T-type of joint, and the oil flows along the straight section ----- with the sensor mounted in the _||_ section. i think the typical oil pressure is somewhere in the 50psi range (judging by typical aftermarket gauges), and it's usually kinda warm. if he's using gardening type joints and clamps, i'd stand back with a handful of rags at the ready. |
