so, today was that fateful day when i registered the ninja zx-9r, put on plates, poured in some fuel (was empty, so added around 1gal), and took it out for my first ride. apparently, i'm still alive, but it DEFINITELY is an anxious bike! first time out, stalled it in the first foot! ok, clutch is grabby, throttle is sensitive. realized that the shoes i have aren't the best for that bike, since i can't get my toes under the shifter and i can't feel it clicking when i DO manage to shift. anyhoo, rode around the neighborhood for a while in first gear only (it'll do 60mph in 1st, so shifting wasn't exactly necessary). i think i'm getting the hang of controlling the throttle and launching it smoothly. but those shoes - damn, gotta get something different. drove the car to a few bike shops, tried out a few pairs, and brought home a new pair of slippers in kawasaki green (really, i wish they had blue or black, cuz DAMN they're bright). now the shifting feels GREAT! i still haven't touched the rear brake, but the front is plenty strong. left hand is a bit sore from the clutching (and maybe other things, like angle of lever and my weight on my wrists), but otherwise i'm scuff-free! didn't lose it anywhere, and just one or two stalls at a green light. refueled with 5gal of go-juice, so tomorrow i can put on more miles (got 49km / 30miles put on today). yay!!! ps - sportbikes are fun and fast, but DAMN that throttle is sensitive!!! gonna have to work on that a lot. not at all surprised at the "this bike is NOT newb-approved" statements, cuz it sure as hell is NOT easy to learn on. |
