Then go buy the more expensive one. You obviously aren't interested in learning to ride it, and it'll scare the holy hell out of you the first time you do, and then you can park it in your driveway for all the lambo and ferrari drivers to see.

Most of the people who are giving you advice are veteran riders. You may not like it, but they are looking out for your best interests with thier suggestions.

No, we will not. If you don't like it, too bad. We don't like hearing about riders who buy a sportbike then spread themselves across the pavement. If you have a bike that will do 200 kph, you will do 200 kph. Don't tell us that you won't because we have seen too many other riders who do.

Honestly, if you buy a Ferrari or a Lambo and just cruise in it, then you bought it for the wrong reason too.

Look, if you want a Yamaha or a Suzuki, you make the decision. You need to do the research and find out what you like about each manufacturer or bike.

Until you show us some better decision making skills, we will continue to tell you the same thing.

Good find Clint! Missed this thread 1st time round.

The article Monica presented was a great effort to break down the thought processes of many who want fast and furious out of the chute. If only the info could be taken to heart, and be seen as an attempt to educate a newcomer with pure motives.

I liken the whole process to trying to educate a teen about dangers 'out there'. If they only choose to listen and learn, they are benefitted for life. Sadly, some put up blinders, ignoring well intentioned advice and eventually suffer the sting of the consequences of their choice.

Bottom line...there will always exist those who fail to listen to reason, despite the best evidence eloqently presented...
To those who blatantly refuse sound advice, might as well purchase their designer casket along with their designer bike. Nuff said.

All right. That'll do.

Ccc, if you want to learn about motorcycling, please stick around and learn what we have to teach. If not, we can't help you. We are a motorcycling community, not a poseur festival.

ccc ... you want a bike to match your BMW 7? Why not look at the BMW R1150? That would at least "keep it in the family"?

Oh, and then don't forget to get the top-of-the-line BMW "cool black" leather racing suit, flip-up helmet and all the trimmings. You wouldn't want to be caught on that bike wearing non-matching gear!

From his origional post
"I am thinking about buying 1 of these 3 Yamaha YZF-R1, GSX-R1000, and the Hayabusa."

Good luck finding insurance, I wouldn't insure a newbie on it !

Okay.. my turn. CCC. Please listen to what I have to say and understand that I came to this forum in early August finding advice and wanting a bike just like yours. My first thoughts were: 1) I could learn to handle the bike. 2) I would NEVER go over 100!!! 3) I would never race anyone on it. 4) I just want to look cool.

Rowdy and Inspiron showed those newbie riding guides and I read through the forums for HOURS getting knowledge. I learned a GREAT deal about what I was looking for and decided I MUST take the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF) course first.

I passed the MSF and the SAME DAY had my bike (an used 2000 Kawasaki Ninja 500R) paid for. The thrill of a "smaller" (in comparison) bike still gives me chills just thinking about it. I had to constantly remind myself to be responsible because I could go 0-60 in 4.2 seconds and LOVE that. I found myself racing an SRT-4 at one point (yes I did win ) and later that month went 100mph on a straightaway. That's TWO of the FOUR things that I had told myself that I would NOT do going into it.

I consider myself an honest person and would really appreciate you taking this to heart:

1) You WILL (not might) but WILL test the limits of your bike. I have read people's accounts (on this forum) of people doing just that. Ask any rider.

2) Don't get a bike if you are just trying to fit in. My friend owned an R6 when he lived with me. This was BEFORE I got my bike and he indirectly influenced my purchase.

3) I have to tell you this: If your friends can't respect the fact that you want to LEARN first (I mean a good YEAR) then you need new friends. My guess is that because they are gym friends you are also wanting to look 'tough' like them. Admittingly, a bike makes someone look tough.

4) Taking the MSF course was the BEST thing I did for myself. The second was buying a LEATHER jacket and Icon body armour to go on underneath. You never know when you could go down or what you could hit.. or WHERE it could hit. It's useless to buy a $600 helmet and a $300 jacket if you end up falling on a hard pointed surface on your chest, crushing your heart.

5) Understand that the people on this forum are here to help. They didn't seek you out and yell negative things toward you. You sought advice and you received it. When I first was told that I should start on a smaller bike, I thought Red was just some stupid old guy (sorry Red) that thought I should have training wheels too. It took some time, but I realised the wisdom in getting a smaller bike and still love my Ninja!

All in all: Be safe man! Listen to those that want the best for YOU, not your public appearace.

Oh, I am just some stupid guy, make no mistake (is 33 old?).

Great post, though. Unfortunately I think it has fallen on absent ears. Maybe someone else will read it and learn.

It's a matter of who you ask.

Ask me, and I'll say no.

Ask "our" 22yo daughter, and she'll say "33 is not old ... it's ancient!"
