Here is my question...

How long should i go before the FIRST clean and lube? I have kerosene at the house and some Suzuki Chain lube ready.

My Gixxer has about 500 miles on it so far, all city driving. Never even been in dirt or grass. I check the chain before every ride and it still looks new and has the original coat of chain wax on it.

So how long should i go before i clean that old stuff off, clean the chain real good and lube it? Is there a magic number of miles or do i just go until i see the original lube coming off or the chain looking dirty?

The standard recommendation is to check it every 400 miles or so (every 2nd fillup), and clean and oil as needed. If it only has 500 city miles on it, it probably doesn't need it...

I always keep my bike on a rear-stand at home. I can tell by how it sounds and how long the rear wheel spins when I give it a whirl by hand (or with my foot). It's easy to tell by looking, too.

Kerosene is the recommended product for cleaning the chain. I use mineral spirits and a toothbrush, per the dealer, it cleans just as well, and you don’t have to go to the pumps for a gallon of it $$$$.

Does anybody else do this also?

Is there any harm in it?

I bought some stuff the other day that cleaned it right up yesterday. Made by Motul I think. But I also bought one of those grunge brushes and it made it sparkle like new.

This is the recomendation of the service manager at my Suzuki dealership, who has also been racing bikes for years. It WILL NOT dry the O ring seals out in the chain, it is as good as kerosene. I have been cleaning my chain for 2 years this way.

I bought the Grundge Brush with a degreaser and it made all the differnece.
A 15 minutes job is reduced to 3min with superior results.

I use just a grunge brush and then use the Bel-Ray lube on it.
