Fellas, they're not going to break from just riding. You have to slam them repeatedly. Keep an eye on that area for any signs of deformation and ride.

So what happened with your bike? Did they give you a new one? Tell you to go to . Investigating? Would like to know how they address something like that.

What's his name and them were just eyeing a gixxer-1000 ... looking her over real good, and the frame snapped right before their eyes. They said it was amazing and astounding... the decided not to ride the bike BTW.

On the outside it appears this problem is of the same vintage as the Ford Explorer/Tire fiasco. Suzuki doesn't want to take ownership. However, unlike Explorers, people can and will wheelie their GSXR's which could gradually be killing the frames. I have one other fundamental question, if this IS a problem, why have we heard nothing from all the racers? They bring the front end up all the time coming out of corners? I would think we would have heard from that world as well? thoughts?

My brother is a metallurgist (spelling?) or used to be a few years back. He has several patents in Aluminum Alloys. According to him...this would be a very common occurance. In many cases, the alloy (metal) is created by filling an aluminum tube with aluminum powder & a mix of the other stuff which causes the reaction to create the alloy. They will have usually "heat-treated" the aluminum while it was still in powder form (for hardness). Then, very often, they will push or compress these filled tubes while cold to form the alloy. Basically you end up with a hunk of a new type of metal. While very strong & very, very light...it's also very brittle. One of his patents went for the seat tracks in F14's & oddly enough...they have had problems with the seats breaking free from the track. Go Figure! |

One problem in working with metal is that the quality of the material isn't always consistent throughout. At my last job, I saw $10k plates sent to the scrap yard from time to time due to a botched machining operation because of the inconsistent quality of the metal. That probably doesn't translate directly to the matter at hand, but nonetheless, if a bike goes down, sh1t breaks.

I would hire a private investigator and push Suzuki into paying for damages. Not only to the tune of medical bills but also a replacement bike of equal value of your choice. It's easy to run a ad in a newspaper asking others if they know anyone with a similar issue. Suzuki doesn't want to be in the headlines for a bad product. I disagree about this model bike not being able to handle wheelies. If it can handle the stresses of hours on a track then it should without a doubt be able to handle a few wheelies! Hell, the pros stand them up down the straights during every race. Hard to watch that and then be told it CAN"T handle that kind of stress. I would fight it to the end, personally. Good luck and glad to hear your injuries were minor. Ride Safe! |

thats a little worrysome to anyone who rides a suzuki....gsxr or not. they should know that any literbike will wheelie on occasion, whether purposly or on accident. if a wheelie can brake the frame, what about a bump in the road under moderate to hard braking?

That's just it... a wheelie performed properly by a rider skilled enough to be on a Gix1000 in the first place won't break anything. It's the repeated slams from squidly behavior that do it. The bike's designed to be as light as possible for HANDLING reasons, not to be stunted.
