Default Abrasion resistance standard

I would, if I had the resources, come up w/ an abrasion standard. I think 1.2mm cowhide would be the "standard" and all else would be compared. I am willing to pay for good gear, but what the heck does aramid do to a pair of jeans to make them worth 90 bux. I mean they may be more tear resistant-but how much so-and I have the same question for leather mesh etc. etc. etc. Maybe we can come up with some resources around here and we can call it the MJT standard (motorcycling journal tear standard-and become the next Snell out there. Anyone else agree that it's hard to know whats worth the money out there?

AFAIK, standard leather is 1.4mm.

Here's a good reference about abrasion testing and materials: http://www.roadsafety.mccofnsw.org.a...lealternatives

It doesn't really matter what the standard is. It's only a reference point. A material is either above, at, or below the standard. Isn't most high-end racing gear Kangaroo and thinner than typical cowhide?

Kangaroo is more abrasion resistant than cowhide so it can be thinner.

I spend a lot of time in tanning booths to increase my skin's abrasion resistance....

Different gear is suitable to different rides. There is no way I will require the same abrasion resistance as a MotoGP racer - and I require less protection in my car than does a NASCAR driver.

I agree, but I do believe a standard would be nice to gauge the value of my dollar when purchasing gear. A standard would also provide some data to make an informed decision as to what I buy(amnt of protection to cost ratio). I am buying it for both protection and performance, where some may buy simply for looks.

anyone else think this way?

Sure. But you can get an idea of how a given fabric will perform relative to leather by reading reviews and manufacturer data, at least in most cases.

I wouldn't mind seeing a DOT standard for street motorcycle gloves, jackets and pants. No matter what kind of DOT helmet you buy, you know it's tough enough to be helpful in a wreck. Buying a jacket, you are pretty much guessing. Maybe your jacket has awesome leather, but will the seams stay together? All you can do is stick with name brands and try to judge for yourself - but I haven't destroyed any jackets in testing so what do I really know?

A related note, I found this story interesting: http://www.vansonleathers.com/produc...mx_ventmax.htm

Unfortunately that would add to the cost.
