Default Oil topic ( I know, again!, sorry)

Ok, someones gotta throw me a bone here.

I already browsed the mechanics corner, and the links didn't help too much. I am gonna swap out my 10W-40 stock oil (changed at 600, 2800) by the dealer, with synthetic. (its at 7500 now and screaming help). I just have no time to have anyone do it, so I am going to go out and get a filter and some synthetic myself.

I imagine just draining it, and adding the synthetic with a new filter is good enough. But I need some real cut and dry advice on oil brands and oil weights. I ride in northern california, it gets down to about 50 degrees F, and as high as 100. I only start riding the bike when it has warmed to about 125 F, and it quickly rises to 166F (on cold days and 177 on warmer days) If I sit idling, it will rise to 225 F. I don't bring it to the track, but certainly it gets its fair share of 11,000 rpm action (once or twice a day).

Someone just give me a couple good suggestions and I will go see what I can find. Thanx so much in advance.

Why would you want some schmuck making $7 per hour messing with your bike in the first place?

Stick with the same weight or slightly heavier than recommended by the manufacturer. Drain, change filter, refill. It doesn't need to be any more complicated than that. Mobil makes Mobil 1 in 10W-40 for bikes, but at $8/qt it's usually considered overkill considering how good regular Mobil 1 is. I recently switched to Mobil 1 15W-50 (they don't make 10W-40 for cars) and am happy with it. Some bikes have been known to have clutch slippage with car oil, but it's extremely rare.

Thanx for your reply. I just got the castrol 10-40 and a new filter, the change was a snap. The old oil made me promise myself I would never let it go that long again. (5000 miles). Also swapped out the plugs and cleaned the air filter. Service complete. (followed up with a coat of wax) A guy at the dealer (walking around in full leathers with his helmet still on) was asking ME which oil to choose (some tourer 1200). He said the manual called for 10W-30 (although I had never heard it). I told him you guys suggested to stick with regular oil and change it often, needless to say he left with the same oil I got.
