Default New, need advice/basic instructions.

I'm 17, never ridden a bike before. Pretty small (5'9.5 - 120-130lbs) if that matters. And I'm wanting to get a motorcycle as early as this May, but probably will be later ($$$$ is tight).

I've been reading around and you guys all seem to suggest a Ninja 250, or a GS500 or similiar bike. Now I have no problem starting out on a slower/smaller bike for practice purposes...but personally I don't really like the style of those particular bikes. Any other bikes good for beginners/reliable/slower that look different? I know it's not a huge deal, but it kind of matters to me what I'm riding.

I plan to practice in a parking lot before taking it out on the road of course. I live in a pretty dead part of my community, so going around the neighborhood is pretty much 0% risk of hitting anyone or getting hit.

Also, what all is involved with getting my motorcycle license? Do I need it before I can purchase a bike? And about how long does it take to get? I won't be riding without it, where I live it's illegal.

My dad used to ride a bike, but hasn't been on one in ~20+ years. Doubt he will teach me anything, so I think I'm alone on this one.
