Default New chain?

I went into the dealership today for an inspection, and the guy said I needed a new chain. I had never heard of having to replace the chain, can somebody fill me in on why I might need a new one? (or is he yanking my chain? (no pun intended) )

Wow. Read your manual much? Any chain in any machine needs to be replaced periodically, and often the sprockets with it. Your manual clearly states how to check for excessive wear in the chain and when to replace it. Basically, there are marks on the tension adjuster. If you're getting toward the futhest marks, you're probably due. The manual will direct you to measure between a specific number of links to determine wear.

I thought that chains and sprockets were like oil and filter - always replace both together. Are there times when you would replace a chain without replacing the sprockets? I would be worried about a "used" sprocket shortening the life of my new chain...and sprockets are less expensive than a second chain!

I had my chain replaced last fall. My chain was bad and some of the bearing races were severly worn. I did not get my sproket changed at the time.

I think sprockets suffer the most wear when the chain is run after its useful wear limits, and you can tell with a visual check whether they're worn. If a person neglects his chain, it's likely to wear out before the sprockets, too. That being said, I did replace my sprockets the one time I've replaced a chain.
