Default The good news...

... is that my bike is not seriously damaged...

the bad news is that it is slightly damaged.

and before y'all start gloating, i did not have a hi side at 130 MPH.

I was actually in IHOP at 3 AM eating breakfast. A couple of freinds of a freind of mine left and walked around the building and came back to a window and waved at me and indicated that my bike was tipped over.

I got annoyed and went outside and after they helped me lift it up surveyed the damage.... the right mirror has very minor scratches to the housing. The right front turn signal has very very minor scratches. The bar end weight on the right side is slightly scratched. the fairing on the right side has miniscule scratches, of the sort that some black wax will get out. And the tiny bolt on protective triangle that sits on the high point of the side of the motor is dinged. The brake lever is bent forward, though i managed to correct that with a towel and a set of channel locks.

I have mixed emotions... I am one of those guys who kinda likes getting the first scratch on the car, because well... then it is scratched and you do not worry about every grain of dust out there... on the other hand i like my rides to look on point, and shiny aluminium through mat black paint dos not look so good.

Also there is the question of what happened... the bike was parked in the center of a parking space with no cars on either side. Winds we gusting to maybe 10 MPH at the most, so it was not knocked over by a car or by the wind... it was on tarmac, so there was no sinking in the mud, besides it "fell" on the side away from the stand... which leads me to conclude that someone saw the bike, fancied themselves on it threw a leg over it and tried to stand it up.the fact that the sterring was locked was unexpected and they did not correct for it and don it tumbled. With the steering locked it was a b* to pick up so I assume that they tried and left scared...

So by a bike friday, have someone else damage it stupidly on tuesday...

YAY!

Gives me an excuse to buy some flush fiy turn signals though.

Finally, I do not trust stressed aluminium... any advice on a good set of aftermarket levers... preferably in black for a 05 R1?

Damn ... not even a week old.

There are some bikes that are known for having the sidestand too long, but I don't think the R1 is one of these (the SV 650 was a candidate, IIRC). A too-long sidestand would mean that the bike would be unstable on the stand, and could tip over even in a light wind gust.

I've seen carbon-look brake levers available on eBay in Europe, I'm sure they are available in the USA too.

IHOP ... mmmm. One of those things that I sometimes miss. If I want good pancakes, I have to make them. At least I can get Bisquick at Walmart in Germany ... it makes the process a bit quicker.

That sucks. I have a hard time believing that no one saw it happen.

I would dust that bike for prints!

Sorry to hear about that. Sounds like what happened to mine before I bought it. The guy was washing it in his driveway (which has a hellacious slope), and it tipped over to the right side (don't know if he knocked it over or what). But it scratched the tail section (2 inches long), put a couple on the upper edge of the front fairing (.5 inches long), and scuffed the mirror. Surprisingly, that was it!

sorry to hear about it, I had mine knocked over in the garage by my cousin when he was "borrowing" my lawnmower.

Luckily it didn't scratch anything, as he kept it from going down hard.

Sucks to hear that. I hate to hear about anything bad happening to any bike, and when it's another R1 I just start to get mad. Some people just have no respect for others stuff.
