I also called GEICO today for quotes on 3 bikes that im looking at . . . and all were over 4000 . . . including the sv650s 2006. . . i don't think the worker put the sv in the right catagory because he priced it more than the 06 r6 and a kawa zzr600.

i then called my co American Family and full coverage is like 790 for a year. . . on the 2006 sv650s. WE HAVE A WINNER. i continue the calling tomorrow. i just laughed at GEICO. For all their advertising, they suck on bikes.

It didn't work out that way for me. My last bike was a Triumph Rocket 111, I did pay full MSRP becaus it was a brand new model. $15000 plus about another grand for tax, and license. I was rear ended, and the bike was totalled last Sept, the bike was about a year old, with 6500 miles on it. My insurance company (State Farm) wrote me a check about 10 days later for $14500. In addition to that, they also replaced my glasses, watch, and helmet that were damaged when I went down. I wasn't even wearing the helmet, it was straped to the seat. The guy that hit me ( no insurance) was deemed to be at fault, so my rates did not go up. So I can't agree with those of you that are saying you don't need full coverage. By the way, this is my 5th claim in 7 years, and my rates have not gone up, because none of them were my fault.
If none of the accidents were your fault and your insurance paid for every one of them, then it came out of the uninsured motorist portion of your coverage, not collision or comprehensive. Collision covers only *your* bike and maybe your equipment and only for accidents that you cause. Comprehensive covers only your bike in cases where it is not involved in an accident, such as getting stolen.

The thing is, those two coverages make up the vast bulk of your premium and have a very limited payout, ie - the cost of your bike and maybe your equipment.

You don't mention what your insurance payments are. Many people get perfectly reasonable rates and full coverage makes a lot of sense.

You're always gambling if you don't carry full coverage. The question you have to ask is at what point is the risk vs reward just not worth having the coverage. That point is different for different people. There will always be some people that come out ahead in the insurance game regardless of how much the premiums are. However, these people are in the vast minority. If they weren't, all the insurance companies would be bankrupt. I maintain that it is foolish to pay $1800 or more a year for full coverage on something that has a value of $10,000 or less. Drop the collision and comprehensive and carry only liability and, I guess if you are as unlucky as Rickster, carry uninsured motorist as well

Um, you're responding to a comment on page 1 (from January 10th).

Rowdy rides a Bandit 1200S - a touring bike - not a cruiser.

Rowdy has a very simple attitute - "I wasn't put on this earth to be nice." On the other hand, he is one of the "seven sages" of this forum. He knows what he is talking about.

That's true of lots of bikes, but we don't all have Burgman 400s. Sometimes you want something because you want it. Variety, etc. (..and they made you moderator?!?!?)

IMHO the problem with Supersport Race Replicas is not the bike, it's the riders who really can't handle them or ride them in ways that make the insurance rates so high. I just renewed my full coverage insurance with roadside assistance and $2000 additional accessory coverage for my C50 and paid $190 for the year. I guess we C50 pilots are a mild bunch...

I almost feel bad reading this thread, some of the posts are really odd. I don't have any desire to by a Gixxer 1000 - but it's a beautiful bike with really awesome engineering so I can see why somebody would buy one.

I'm just hoping that people with no riding experience don't do so...

Why should the politicians get involved? What about PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY? Do you want the government to step in and stop sales of all bikes over 100hp? Or maybe all bikes over 50hp?

How about cars? Do you want the government to step in and stop the sales of all Corvettes and Mustang GTs, because they are too powerful?

Suzuki states in their brochures that the GSX-R series bikes are "intended for experienced riders only." If people chose to ignore that advice, that is their choice.

Cigarette boxes are clearly labelled that smoking causes cancer, but it is your choice to smoke or not. If you smoke, you are risking death. If you ride a motorcycle, you are risking death too. I don't want the government to come tell me what I can ride. I am an adult, and I make my own choices.

Yeah I'm amazed how much it does cost. In 04 when I got my 750 Progressive was the lowest I found at 1,394 for full coverage with 500 deductable. The next year I found State Farm that it went down to 394.00 for the same coverage. To give you and idea...a friend just came up from Africa...bought a Busa...his insurance from Progressive..for what I had was 18,000! I just said to him "What happen to you..you just get out of jail or what?!" Still 1,800...that's alot of money for that bike per year..I feel for ya.

Nothing personal, but if your quote is THAT high, wait, that ridiculously, outrageously high, you've done something very, very bad at some point in your life.

I mean, I'm 33, I've still got three speeding tickets and pled another ticket down to "defective vehicle" in the past three years, totaled my SV in January, and I pay less than $500/year for FULL coverage on my ZZR. Just for fun, I got a quote for an Aprilia Mille from my ins co, and it was only $635/year.

C'mon, you did SOMETHING, right?
