Default 18/19 year olds with 600's

I've been looking into insurance prices for Gixxer 600's and (don't flame) CBR600's, and for full coverage it's gonna be around $3000 a year, and that's with a clean record! I was wondering what you guys were paying, and if that's reasonable. My stang is around $1600 a year for liability, which is about the same as liability for a 600. How do you guys afford the insurance? Is a bike all you have? I am thinking about storing the stang for a while once I get a 600 that way I can afford one. Any thoughts?

PS Sorry if this has been covered before...

Have you loked into V-Twin bikes (i.e SV650/s)? Because is a V-Twin (GOD knows why) the insurance is significantly lower ... say 60%.

Also, and before anyone says it, are you new to bikes? If you are you should start with something smaller (Ninja 500). With the money you save on insurance the first year you will be able to upgrade next year with the bonus of knowing what you are doing.

Cheers,

You'll pay a pittance for a Bandit 600, too. There are many bikes that would be fantastic to ride and cheap to insure. Skip the race replicas and get a real-world machine.

Cruisers are absolutely out of the question. I can't stand them. If I am going to spend money on a bike, it is gonna be a sportbike. Sorry if I sound blunt, but EVERYBODY is trying to get me to get a cruiser. Sorry, I just don't like them, why waste money on something I hate?

Cheers,
I am new, I just started riding a few weeks ago. I do have something smaller already. A GZ250, and boy is it small. This is for in the future, several months down the road. I would just like to weight my options now so I'm ready when the time comes.

I have looked into the SV's a little bit, but nothing serious. To be honest, I really want something that is pretty darn fast. I have a quick mustang (12 second worthy), and I really want something that will eat it up. I just don't know if an SV650 or an FZ600 or the like would do it. If so, then please tell me more!! I could get the full fairing and still have that sweet look too.

Clint, help a fellow stanger out! Any recommendations then on a fast sportbike that will not kill me on insurance? The F4i's are no cheaper than the RR's as far as insurance (sorry if I'm talking only Honda, that's really the only sportbike I'm familiar with). Are the SV650's pretty good bikes? I've sat on an SV1000 and really liked the balance of it, and the looks too. I've seen some with full fairings, and they look real nice!

Keep the suggestions coming guys!!

GEEZ!! Maybe cus it's a 94? All these quotes are for 05's, which I'm probably looking for a few years older anyway.

Ah, Nut. I figured I'd see a post on this thread from you, in response to my fellow Killeenite!

About insurance, I have only 21 years of age, and pay $550 a YEAR. It's even cheaper than that if you're a homeowner [and can prove it]. I use Progressive. Do I like the company? Negative. But everyone else was ridiculous, $3000/yr and up. Geico wouldn't even quote it, because it was off the charts, and we have had car insurance with them for over 11 years continuously.

The Yamaha dealer on Veterans Mem. Blvd. says the most popular around here is Dairyland insurance. Get an online quote from Progressive. They seem to have a strange sense of logic [A 2002 600 and 750 will cost me exactly the same per year], so they will probably quote you low.

By the way, I have full coverage on my Gixxer, but no collision. You can usually find used parts dirt cheap on eBay anyway.

YEAH! That was a long time ago (well . . . . not THAT long ago). Took off my LBE, flak jacket and Kevlar for the photo shot. M16A2 SN# 6491755. Still remember it. Why? Cuz I cleaned that MFer three times a day at least. Me and my guys weren't having a "Jessica Lynch" incident.

Just for comparison ... I'm 41 years old, with a clean driving record, and ride a GSX 1400. My insurance is CHF 2'000 per year (that's $1,550) for full coverage, including replacing my gear and helmet (up to $1500) if I should crash.

But, insurance is very expensive here in my corner of this planet.

You can't legally ride a Gixer600 here until you are 21, unless you have at least 2 years on a smaller less powerful bike, I think that is a good idea.

Here is a link from a training school that explains the process in the UK,

The same is true in Switzerland.

There are three categories: F (mofas and 50ccm rollers), A"restricted" (mototcycles up to 34 HP), and A"unrestricted" (motorcycles > 34HP).

You can get an "F" license at 16, and you have to be at least 18 years old to get an "A". If you are under 25, you must first get the "A-restricted" and ride "regularly" during two years, then you can apply to take the test for the "A-unrestricted".

People over 25 can step directly up to an "A-unrestricted", but this may change in the future since there have been a lot of accidents with the mid-life-crisis crowd (over-40, buying a Gixxer or R1 as a first bike).

What the hell then? I've been getting online quotes from progressive and they are the ones ripping me off!! Am I doing something wrong? Maybe I should call them.

I would get just liability, but if I have to make payments then full coverage is a neccessity. I don't mind paying full, it's just it's insane for some reason. I'll try getting another quote. Thanks Dre!

According to the MAIDS study ( European equivalent of the Hurt report ) 27% of riders involved in accidents have had their permits for less than a year and a total of 43 % for less than three.

In canadian studies, sportbikes account for 16% of registrations but account for 46% of all claims ( this isn't the case in Europe where power limits exist for new young riders ).

GSX-R 600 is the most crashed bike and the most often stolen bike so high insurance rates are to be expected.

Are you doing it through the internet? Thats a NO, NO!!! Call them, let them ask you questions that may help your "profile". As an example, I lived with my younger sister. That helped as they figured I wanted to stay alive to take care of her. I bet they did not ask that on the internet form.

As for a "darn fast bike", have you tried a SV650? If you are in the twisties you are as fast (if not faster) than the 600s. If you are going straight, except for >80mph runs, you will "roll" away slightly faster than the other guys. Finally, if you want to go fast, 120 mph should be fast enough ... and probably 55mph above speed limit.

As a 30-year-old newbie I know there is nothing more exiting than having made it to this age .... and fully understand that in order to enjoy life you need to be alive. You have many years of ridding ahead of you, leave some exitement for the future.
