Default K&N Filter for SV650K5 - FI

All,

Has anyone tried such a filter on a non-modified FI SV (naked)? I've installed K&N filters in my cars for years. They give them a slight improvement and a nice "roar". There is a lot of comments out there, but they all relate to the non-FI version of the SV.

What I have in mind is - if the K&N gives me a little little extra grunt - to increase the front sproket by 1t. As is the SV is like a little tractor. There aren't that many curvy roads around here and I figure I can use extra lenght in the gears in order to shift less when riding with my 600-IL4 friends.

What do you think? Comments appreciated.

I put in the K&N and didnt feel much a difference. The airbox is so restrictive that you really wont feel much of a difference with the K&N. To really feel a difference you could put in the K&N, remove the snorkel and install a power commander.

I tried removing the snorkel as well, but the bike felt low on power, off idle. If you havent done any mods yet, start with the exhaust. The sound is awesome.

Thanks for your comments.

Here is an idea. What if one creates a frontal air intake that feeds the snorkel? It can be a piece that you can instal and take off at will. If the new piece is well sealed against the snorkel and the airbox is tightly sealed one may get the effects of i) a cold air feed - vis.a.vis the warm air under the tank, and ii)a slight air compression effect in the air filter box - not only would the cylinders be sucking air ... it would be pushed in from the intake.

Now, would the FI realize that there is more O2 and adjust the fuel level ... or is the SV FI basic and not realize it? - which would make the bike run lean.
mmm...

I'll give it a try over the weekend.

I'm I nuts? I used to do car performance so I figure I can do bike work. I know there are pro shops out there doing it, but i)I would rather feel great about doing my own mods, ii) safe money (should be number 1) and ... iii)have something to do on rainy days and nights.

For some reason the bike's fi is not smart enough to figure this out on its own. I originally thought, just like you, it would be able to do it. After reading posts at svrider.com, I decided not to take the chance of running lean and save up for a power commander.

Happy modding.

You can lift the tank or add some hole into the box with out desnorkeling the whole thing. However it's gonna be louder then stock, your gonna hear your intake.

I am not sure on the SV but the Gixer will make automatic fuelling adjustments of up to 5% away from standard, then you need to look at a dyno and remap or a Power Commander.
