Default Taken for a ride =(

Brought my 2001 GSX-R600 in for service Saturday cuz it wasn't running right. Me being a newbie when it comes to Bike mechanics, asked him what he (Service dept guy) thought it might be. First he told me it could be Bad Gas or dirty injectors and told me to ride it hard and come back if things don't get better. Well after going outside to start it up, it stalled for like the 6th time that day. I went back in and got him to come out and actually listen to it. Immediately he told me the Carbs were dirty and had to be cleaned ($280 job). I (not knowing any better) of course said ok and signed the work order for it to be done.

Talking to some ppl later that day it was presented to me that my bike has EFI and is not Carbeurated. WTF!! How can he fix and charge me for something that isn't there? What can I do now?

HELP!!!

Quite frankly, it is up to YOU to educate and LEARN about your bike. Learn as much as you can, so that you can make educated decisions on what you can fix, and what would be better off left to "professionals" (and I use that term loosely).

Get a manual and start reading. Also, check your air filter and fuel filter. Something as easy as that, or a disconnected vacuum line could be what is causing the problem.

Whatever you do, get the bike out of there and find somewhere else to get it fixed.

Default well...

Do they have Detailed Service and repair manuals for bikes like they do for cars (i.e. - Chilton Manuals)? Or is the owner's manual informative enuff to do most repairs.

Haynes or Clymer are both good. There is also the factory service manual. I prefer to have BOTH an aftermarket and factory manual for each bike that I own.

For example - I used the Clymer manual on Saturday to troubleshoot the electrical system (mainly because of the color wiring diagram). Today, I am using the Factory Service manual to route the harness correctly. Good stuff in both manuals.

There's no excuse for his ignorance or outright dishonesty. I'd make a BIG issue of it and refuse payment for all but any legitimate work done. Don't pay for what can't be justified as a possible solution for the problem. Not sure what is and isn't? Ask us.

Have you already picked up the bike? Did you get any paperwork stating what work was done? Also, does the bike run better now?

It's possible he simply misspoke when he mentioned the dirty carb instead of injectors. You did say that he thought it might be 'bad gas or dirty injectors' when you fist took it in. If he had wanted to screw you, he could have done it right off the bat and not had you ride the bike more to see if the problem fixed itself.

No I haven't picked up the bike since they were closed yesterday. I did sign the work order, however on Saturday when I dropped it off. I am gonna call them this morning and see if I can talk to the service Manager tho.

Well despite what he told you they won't do a carb cleaning and put that down on paperwork if your bike doesn't have carbs. You can request a detailed break down of ALL work performed and ALL parts and supplies used during the servicing. You should also get the time units required for all services done.

And yeah like everyone has said before your just asking to be screwed IDB if you have no clue as to how your bike works, what's on it or anything about it.

A guy I work with was %%%%%ing about getting a new rear tire for his GSXR 600 and the dealership was gonna charge him $220 (approx) for it mounted. I'm like WTF?!?! the tire should only cost $120-$140 and mounting for less then $30. Lucky for him I told him a few places to get a pilot power cheaper then the dealer's D208 and also where to have it mounted cheaper then the dealers $60 fee. Oh he's also not paying them like $30-$40 for a chain cleaning cause I'm letting him borrow my rear stand now too.

I do suggest you use the forums out there and ask other riders before you start paying for services you can do or don't need to be done.

Well I called him this morning and he said he was wrong, it is fuel injected (duh!) He said the injection system looks fine but my throttle body was out of sync? That sound like it could be the culprit? He said it runs smooth now but I won't know till I pick it up later tonite.

Are there four tb's on an efi bike? If so, it's possible that they needed to be synched. They'd have to be pretty far out to cause stalling, though.
