Glad you got your bike patched up and back. Indeed thanks for posting back. I was happy to see mine was tight and staked as it should be...the sound I was hearing the other day is gone but still kind of on my mind.

No it was like that when I bought it. It rides different now that the belt is set properly. The belt was so tight before there was not any deflection whatsoever. Gotta believe it put a lot of stress on the shaft and bearings.

| My thoughts exactly. Unless Yamaha wants to step up and fix this problem, I think I'm going to set put everything back together, set the tension correctly, and see where it goes from here.

I think the original owner lowered the bike himself and probably tightened the belt too much. I haven't touched it. Funny thing is as when I had the dealership change my oil and put on a new front tire last summer they mentioned in passing that the belt was tight. I was like ok...why did you not loosen it if you thought it was a big deal. I took it out again today and it seems faster than normal and it coasts better when letting off the gas. I suppose its all attributed to a looser belt...

they prolly thought the belt would get loose as it was driven. and normally they would be right. apparently, the kevlar reinforced belt did not stretch.

Gents, I'm getting real sick of a VERY distinct WHINE in 3rd gear when driving at lower speeds. It literally sounds like the 3rd gear (and only the 3rd!) is running downright DRY! Whines like hell and if I rolled by you slowly (35 or less) you'd literally HEAR IT whining. WTF OVER?? I checked my pulley-nut and all's good! I use high-quality lubricants everywhere, and just had it changed. Does anyone else have this issue? Transmission whining in 3rd gear? VERY LOUD? |

I have one of the first 06 liners with close to 30K miles and the third set of tires. Bridgestone this time. Looking to get a 2010 super liner this spring. Zero problems so far. Was at the dealer for the first oil change and the three sets of tires. That's it. If you are in a turn like an entrance to the x way or next to a concrete wall. Where the noise from the bike will reflect. You can here a wine or howl coming from the front wheel. Its like the old toy tops. The harder you spin the top the louder it howls. The same with the front wheel. Willie Last edited by WillieWherry; 10-12-2009 at 08:04 AM. |

As an update, I disassembled the middle drive gear, loosened the belt and checked for wear. I had a small amount of wear on the teeth of the shaft and and middle drive gear. Lubed it up good and reassembled. Torque to spec and then reset the belt tension appropriately. Rode about 500-600 miles round trip to the shore and haven't had a problem or noise since. I hope it lasts. If not, I'll ride it until something pops up. Not sure if I mentioned it earlier either...but my local dealer said he's heard of the nut coming loose but hasn't seen anything from Yamaha. Called a service rep and he said he's never heard of it.
