Default Help a new guy out

Well I just got my new 06 Roadliner midnight. I haven't even ridden it yet and I love this bike, its way to cold and icy out right now. Well I had it delivered and it has a full tank of gas, I installed my battery tender and then started the bike to insure I didn't mess anything up. I noticed that when I turned the key on the gauge's did their sweep and my fuel Gauge rested to a little before empty it read full before I removed the ground off battery. The dummy light did not come on. Is this normal? Will it read right after I ride it three miles like the book says after refueling?
Thanks for all the help in advance.
