Default Aaargh, low side, no high side ... whew!

Nice day outside.... left work a little early.

Riding home peacefully, until this damn SUV pulls out from a parking lot on the right. Idiot never bothered to look to their left before turning onto the main road. No visibility restrictions.

I grabbed both brakes, rear went into a skid; thought I was going to low side, came out of it, and the bike felt like it was torquing. Felt absolutely sure I was going to high side. Stuck it out. Made it thru!!! Swung back - there's abuot a 10-12 foot long skid mark, courtesy of my rear tire.

Didn't even have to stop to remove ..... 2 ..... body parts .... from my throat!

Older Chinese lady driving the SUV ..... #@^%&*$^ ... didn't even acknowledge her screw-up!!!

Me very pissed!

Here's a question for those who may know.
Does that sound like it could have ended in a high side? Sure felt like it, but I'm not positive.

Hmm. Possible, but only if you let up on the back brake. As long as that rear doesn't regain traction while you're a$$-out sideways, you're pretty much safe from high sides.

Could it be that what you felt was the bike getting light in the rear as you pulled an impromptu stoppie? That would explain both the rear skid letting up, and the bike feeling like it was "torquing" out a bit...just taking a wild guess here.

Congrats on riding it out and avoiding catastrophe

Glad you and your bike made it through okay. Take a few deep breaths and put those two body parts where they belong...and don't bother with the "buy it now" button either.

only way you would of turned that into a high-side is if you would of released pressure on the rear brake and let the rear tire regain traction. You did the right thing by not stopping what you were doing. Either way, atleast you came through allright.

Thanks. I don't think I let go of the rear brake although I could be wrong about that; and I'm pretty sure I didn't do a stoppie!

Doubt if I let go and quickly hit the rears hard again. Still, really felt like the bike was going to toss me for a lob!
I was totally in the mood to flip the old bird a bird, but this bat kept on going ......
Heh, may go back and take a pic of the marks tomorrow!

Clarification for you nuts:
That's a photo of the rubber marks on the road, not of the underwear!

You need to add one move to your emergeny braking - when you grab the brakes, grab your clutch at the same time. When your rear is locked up and sliding sideways, you will high-side if the rear wheel grabs. IIRC, whey you keep your foot on the brake and you've got the clutch engaged, the chances of a highsider are minimal.

Interesting point. I'd like to think my reaction was the same as in a car - brakes AND clutch. The fact that I didn't have to restart would mean the clutch WAS in. Happened pretty fast, though, so here's hoping my reactions were the correct ones.

What (still) gets me is the fact that this old bat didn't even look like she was aware of what she had done.

And now, to open the flame gates (this is not meant to be racist, just my read of generalized driving skills): a woman in an SUV ..... an old woman in a SUV ..... an old Chinese woman in an SUV. What chance did I have???

The only worse possible thing would be an old Chinese woman in an SUV on a cell phone!

My wife was born in Vietnam which is right below China. She has a perfect driving record and drove my long bed Silverado 1/2 PU with a full camper shell for a few years without putting a scratch on it. I finally bought her a brand new 2005 Dodge Caravan because she deserves it and I trust her skills 100%. I trust her with my and our son’s life when she is behind the wheel.
I used to make fun of Asian drivers back when I was ignorant to the fact that Asians are not all crappy drivers. There are crappy drivers of EVERY race, white included. What I don't trust are these young kids racing around like they are in a movie, drunks, people on cell phones or women (of any race, age or color) putting on make up behind the wheel. I would include men on the last one but I haven't and hope I will never see that.
I know the Chinese comments were a poor attempt at humor but please... let's have a little respect. No hard feelings on this end.
Peace.

Good post BigD. There are folks in these boards who are of Asian descent too.
