Default Wheels

As most of you know, I need some new wheels. If you don't know about it find the thread. What I am looking for is different ideas on aftermarket wheels. Got the wife about 90% convinced to let me get some good ones. Show me your best ideas!

the wife 90% convinced is a good thing....but be careful...those females are known to change their minds quite easily and erratically....

trust me I know. Good thing the company I am looking at is a sponser on the 'busa site that I spend a lot of time at and we can usually get decent discounts through him. Just need to be able to get a hold of the guy

If you go aftermarket, get some wheels rated for the street. Many compaines make very lightweight racing wheels that will be damaged if you use them on the street.

Also make sure that said company uses either stock (i.e. Suzuki) rear sprocket bolt pattern, or stock carrier w/wheel. PM makes wheels that only uses their rear sprockets.

If you are going this far, might as well get a 520 chain/sprockets to take advantage of the whole "less rotating mass" deal.

With my tq/hp numbers, a 520 conversion would really only do me a lot of good if I were keeping the bike on the track. Seen too many busas set up similiar to mine go through 520 chains faster than most people go through oil.

I can believe it. I would think if you kept the maintenance up on it, it might last a little while.

It would last for a bit, but I am not looking to constantly be buying chains. I haven't done any LSR since I got stationed in P-Cola, just a lot of 1/8th and 1/4 tracks, although I'm not racing for money right now. If I were to get back into taking money for the races then I would definately be setting the bike up for purely track, but it is/was still a daily driver with spirited weekend runs.

Chain ... ah, I love my retro-style bike.

There are companies that offer to mod most bikes to use a belt-drive instead of a chain ... but I'd rather spend the $$$ for a new exhaust and other fun stuff.

I'm still not 100% convinced about shaft drive for "real" a motorcycle ... you cruiser wussies need these low-maintenance things, since you don't know what a torque-wrench is anyway.

chains are for real bikes. Haven't you noticed that HD's don't use them?

The H-D engineers are afraid that someone could be hurt when the sprocket flys off causing the chain to shatter and throw shrapnel in all directions ...

I thought it was because they hadn't figured out a way to chrome the chain and still have it functional?

We'd just rather spend the time riding than gettin' all greasy

Chain/sprockets fail: easy fix. A couple of wrenches, a couple hundred bucks, an hour wrenching, and you're back on the road.

Shaft drive . . . NOT!

your right, when the shaft goes out you need to take it to a mech so that he can grumble and b!tch for a couple of hours about it, then you get the shaft for your time.

With a chain if you want to change your gearing ratio's, takes about 30 minutes at the outside. With a shaft....well, you get the picture

That shaft drive crap is just a sales pitch. Less maintenance...come on. How many hours a year do you chain drive guys spend on your chains? (can you tell mine has a chain)

My chain gets a good cleaning every Sat morning and any other time that I put more than 300 miles on in one trip. There is a reason I usually get a bit over 20k out of a chain. I have seen them freeze, I have seen them snap. Take care of it and it will take care of you.
