Default The Fun Begins

So I finally got to speak to the insurance guy at Allstate. This is what there is to report so far:

1)He tried to make me pay for the towing from my buddy's house to the bike shop...not gonna happen. The bike shop has an account with a local towing place and they are going to put it on their account so that the insurance gets billed.
2)I asked about my personal items that were damaged, ie helmet, riding jacket, coat I was wearing over the riding jacket (it was cold) and my priceless Batman Hoodie that was brand new (got it same day) and now has a road rash hole in it. Here's what he says: I needed to send him an inventory of everything that was damaged with an estimated cost and when I bought these items. For some of the higher end items (helmet and riding jacket) he wants me to ship them to him. Is this right? I mean yeah they are going to buy me new ones, but does that mean they get to keep my old ones?
3)He told me that he will have a technician on site with the bike shop to establish the damages. That prolly means that they are going to try and lowball the damages, but luckily I have already spoken to the bike shop and they are going to be working for me, not them. Allstate says anywhere from 2-4 business days before the tech can get on site with the bike shop to estimate damages.

So yeah...its fun, but at least so far I have not gotten shafted with any unnecessary bills (ie towing). I'll keep everyone informed of whats going on. I'm going to meet the tow truck now, so lets hope they accidentally drop it off the truck so that there is more damage for them to total my bike with.

That's the first time I hear that an insurance company wants you to ship them the damaged goods...

I was once in a car accident where my glasses got broken. When I asked them to replace them they asked that I give them the broken ones. I don't think its too unusual. They just want to ensure that you're not using this incident to get a new duplicate set of gear.

What's all this about shipping damaged goods to the insurance company?
You mean I have to buy all my old girlfriends plane tickets to the State Farm Home Office? News to me, but I'll try to contact them and see if they're game.

I love Allstate's TV ads telling how great their service is compared to the "bargain" companies. The last time I had a Progressive claim, a rep was at my office the next day, did an estimate and gave me a check along with a number for the autoshop to call if there was more work required than the adjuster's estimate detailed.

Look out for the "good hands"

echo tlwisner: 2-4 business days to get a tech there is unacceptable, especially in a population center like DC. Last accident I had to deal with (knock knock) was a little over 8 years ago... my wife was sideswiped (missed bing hit head on by about 4 inches) by a 90 year old man who 'fell asleep' at the wheel. (not to start up THAT discussion again ) This was before AL had mandatory liability, btw. He had insurance, but apparently his son went directly to the carrier and cancelled the policy... probably because the he and the rest of the family were on the same policy. At the time I had our cages insured with Progressive.

Progressive had an adjuster on site within 2 HOURS. 120 f#*king minutes, dude. And I live in an area where they have to pipe in friggin' daylight!! Granted, he did try and undercut some of the damages; I told him so and he said take it to whatever shop I wanted and have them call him about additional expenses. I did, they did, and Progressive paid up full. And no, my rates didn't jack up. Only reason I changed the carrier on my cars was to get the discount on my homeowner's insurance. My bikes still insured by Progressive.

I can understand them wanting to see the damaged equipment. I would try and arrange for the guy that's coming to look at the bike to see the equipment first hand, but tell them you want it back... for sentimental reasons or something Worth a shot, anyway.

Just make sure they don't make YOU pay to ship the items to THEM.

(Shipping goods? Kind of shady if you ask me).
