First to the forum. Second, Let an experienced rider try it out. You most likely will end up damaging it, or yourself in the process. If you want to learn properly, take a class like the MSF. There is more to it than any of us can type up on this forum. It's a good bike, but if you dump it, you could be in for thousands in repair costs.

What year is the bike? Walk us through the exact steps and maybe we can help you with a little more information.

Put it in neutral and push it up the driveway.

Are you trying to move the bike when it's running? If you shift into first gear when the kickstand is down the bike will die (even with the clutch handle pulled in).
At least it does on my Katana...I would presume that's something that has been around for a while.

If that's not it, are you letting it warm up for a while? You need to choke it up a bit and let it idle and get warm.

Is it the manual choke Kat?
it's probably not warm enough, Kats (along bith plenty other bikes) won't take the gas immediately. let the bike warm up first at a standstill, or cruising slowly n lower gears (so you don't have to wind the gas-handle open very far)
When the bike is warmed up after a few miles you should be able to accellerate properly.

I know this is a stupid question, but does it have gas in it? (I've lost count of the number of problems I've solved for my friends and family just by asking 'Is it plugged in?')

How cold is it where you are?

To start it, make sure the fuel shutoff is on, turn the ignition on, pull in the clutch or put the bike in neutral, turn the engine cutoff to on, put the kickstand up, and adjust the choke if you need to.

Then you're ready to push the starter. I usually have to give it a little gas just as the bike starts or it will die right away. Then, if the choke is on, I can let go of the throttle. If the choke isn't on, even on a warm day, I have to stay on the throttle for a few seconds to keep it from dying (nothing excessive, just keeping the rpm at around 1.5 to 2K). If the choke is on, then I slowly back it off when the bike revs up to 3K rpm or so.
