Default Motorcycle Co-Op

My local club with somewhere around 250 to 300 members in the LA area is working on putting a Motorcycle Co-Op together. Many members living in apartments etc. and have no where to work on a bike, but would rather do their own maintanance and work. We have almost monthly "Garage Days" at various members homes and business' so folks can work and learn.

We are currently looking at commercial property in a centralized area of LA. Does any one have any insight or information on pulling off a project like this?

Though I don't have a bike I would love to hang out with guys and learn about bike maintanance. I will have a bike one day, plus I don't know many people in my area to ride with for that matter. I'll keep my eyes open for some space, where in LA more specifically?

Peace

Within a 20 mile radius of Glendale/ Lincoln Heights (5 & 110). I'll send you a PM for more local ride info and such.

Already done. A friends plate reads, "BIKSLUT". He's always beggin to take bikes for a ride, so the club got him a plate to match his style!

Me? I don't share my rides, any of them.

Gee just what every neighborhood wants, a Motorcycle Club setting up shop !

Actually sounds like a very good idea but the legal aspect may be a female dog to tackle depending on laws in your area. Co-ops have rules to follow, repair shops have rules to follow, mechanics have rules to follow, cities have rules to follow, zoning laws, insurance aspects, workmans comp, etc......

Yep, we've got those bases being covered. Seems we have several lawyers in our club. We are searching for 1000 to 3000 commercial/industrial site. Not anything that would cause problems with neighbors and such. All up front and legal. It's the lack of real Co-Op experience that's in question I guess.

It would be nice to have one set location to work out of, instead of traveling around each month. The Garage Days are a huge help to Newbs and are a good learning experience for everyone else.

Hope you get it up and running, it's a real good idea.

Actually there is a shop near here that is similar to what you're proposing but for cars. Maybe I should suggest they add a bike lift or two.

Good Idea Uncle Bob, then you would have a warm place to customize your ride all winter long!!

Its like my house! I'm the only one with a garage and a nice assortment of tools. My garage seems to be the garage of choice for my other biker friends. I'm already storing people's bikes for the cold months.

One additional thought regarding the Co-op idea. I think it's a great one, but someone should also look into the mortgage implications. I work for a major mortgage company and we won't do co-ops for any state other than New York and some parts of New Jersey. It may be common enough in your area that there are mortgage companies that will do it, but it's something else to look into.

You usually don't rent a co-op. It is basically like an apartment or condo, but instead of owning the space within the walls, you own shares in a company...

So, you "buy-in" to the company instead of just purchase a condo.

Not very local for me although it sounds like a good idea for those wanting to learn a bit more about their bike.

Come on over! We have a few riders in from the UK on our Memorial day rides every year. They rent bikes in Las Vegas and ride out the rest of the way!
