To me a lot of the loud pipes thing, other than debating it, is cultural. There is a large section of our culture that likes the style and as I have said before it can be difficult to find pipes for a cruiser that are not above db standards. I am sure there are some but hearing them before buying can be difficult. I bet that even when I install a my quiet baffle they will still be loud and I do not have the techno ability to engineer a decent baffle that will not screw up my FI system. Well maybe I can try but I would not know what materials would work well. If my pipes were whisper quiet with the same look I would be just as happy.

So, with that said Annie can I have a cookie??

You can use coal instead of wood IF you are prepared to have the chimney sweep come by more often to clean the ash out of the chimney.

right now, wood pellets are the thing, as you can vent the stove just like a gas stove.

and as for me, I just let the old pipes kind of rust out - and they get a bit louder, but not as much as you'd think.

seen some actual anthracite up close - and no, not in a big hurry to shovel rocks around.

Don't care if they do give a lot of heat, I just don't shovel rocks anymore.

another up and coming technology is geothermal - around these parts it supposedly works quite well.

Long and short of it, ground temp is around 57 degrees, you put heat into the ground over summer (for the a/c) and withdraw heat in winter.

the ideal is that the heating and cooling seasons are about equal; how they figure that fits Wisconsin, I have absolutely no idea.

I would think chicago or a bit further south, the heating and cooling would be nearly equal. Every day heating is offset by every day running the a/c.

Hey Vinnie, save your money, I just put these on my RK and not only are they not quieter, they are actually louder at start-up, the sound is better, more raspy, and they might be slightly quieter at speed, hard to tell, but they are definitely louder at idle and at start-up.

If that's not bad enough for you, they were also a PITA to install, it took me about an hour with an angle grinder to cut a lip off my pipes so that the quiet baffle would fit flush, no mention of this in the instructions.

All they are is a 1 1/4 inch pipe of pipe about 6 inches long with a flat baffle running full length inside, when mounted they make it necessary for the exhaust gasses to execute an additional pass before exiting the pipe so they should create more back pressure as advertised and may help the motor rub better, yet to be determined in my case, I am not happy at all with the fact that they arn't quieter, but I do like the new sound better, so my advice is that if you want them for better sound, go for it, but mine sure arn't quieter, did I mention how they arn't quieter???

Thanks Rick!! Good to know. I might just experiment and make my own, maybe with some glass packing. I do have a few months now to check it all out.

On a related note, the town closest to where I live (I live outside of any township, in the county)put up brand spanking new signs at every road that crosses the town lines reading "SOUND ORDINANCES STRICTLY ENFORCED" According to the local newspaper (if you could call it that, pamphlet may be more appropriate based on size) this was done after a town meeting where "loud motorcycles" were discussed as noise pollution and a deterrent to business in the water front shopping area downtown. This past weekend we had some decent riding days. My only 2 trips into twon were in the cage, but both times it seemed everyone on 2 wheels was getting pulled over and checked out with brand new decibel meters, donated to the local police by the local merchants association in response to police claims during the meeting that they had no way to measure how loud a vehicle is, and no funds to purchase the equipment necessary to enforce the new ordinances if they were passed. Suddenly glad I never swapped out the stock pipes for the Cobra Slashcutss I was eyeing...

you would have just jammed in some steel wool every now and then and the locals would have been placated.
