I have replaced several chains (usually as often as I replaced the cheap tires I used to buy - about every 7 - 8 k) but have never needed to replace a sprocket.

Never would have thought a chain could crack the 20 k region.

i figure get the whole matching shebang. Make it a learning experience at best but its possible i needed to replace it a few k ago but was in denial about having to do it. I might just wrap up the season and deal with it next spring and get the damn snowmobile running instead.

The week of st patrick's day - tuning up the lawnmower.

And if you're neighbors jumped off a cliff - would you too? (Man I hated it when my mom said that!)

said futzing with snowmobile started in march. I got mad at it and worked on other things. Now its the "oh crap snow will be here soon cause its hunting seasons" Also it has to do with the cost benefit ratio of sorts.. whatever that means but it sounds good.

Sat and looked at the Z again when i got home.. and she's back in the game! I must have been mentally retarded or focused on beer and pizza when i last looked at it. But new chain will be needed for next year anyways.

do you really need to replace the sprocket with the chain?

when I had a chain drive bike, the sprocket looked worn, but at 45 k, it was time to get rid of the bike.

Vinnie, you won't believe the difference when you do, we have the same temps here in the Cities, and I just rode home from the Friday night fish fry, (about 15 miles) I had the liner on about 20% power, and I was nice & toasty all the way home, I didn't even put the over pants on, just jeans.

Hummmm, that sounds a bit odd for you Rick but each to his own.

I really wanted to hit some corners hard yesterday but with a beyond bald rear tire I thought I had better not. Can't decide if I should go ahead and get a new rear soon or just wait until next season. It seems that the forks are not bent or out of whack, same with the swing arm. The bike held true and no wobble up to 90mph. I think Yaroslav is kinda bummed that he did not have the patience to wait and have it fixed + after his crash he is a bit leery of getting back in the saddle. He did buy another bike a few days later but since I think he has put 20 miles on it. Gotta work with him, if he ever comes home that is.

its showing wear but to what degree i'm not sure yet. I'll have time to figure out what I plan on doing with it. But I have a feeling i'll have it over 45k.

I could see replacing the drive sprocket, but as the driven sprocket is about a 3:1 reduction, there wouldn't seem to be a big hurry to replace that.

unless you were going to get a different ratio for the rear end.

no, it's math - most front to rear ratios are around 3:1 (about 17 to 45 as was the case with my old 80 cb 750 - to which I went with the smallest rear sprocket I could get, which was around 4 tooth less, anyway, highway speeds went from an ear splitting 7,000 rpm @ 70 to a much more tolerable 5500 @ 70, but I'm sure I'm off).

I have seen wore drive sprockets, and it does happen, but unless you have a performance bike, replacing the drive sprocket is more than likely a waste of money.

keeping all in mind that my info is based off a bike that was built 30 years ago, had about 50 hp, but did have a final gear ratio of about 1:1 from engine rpm to drive cog.

so, the rules could well be different these days.

if you really want to see a wore drive cog, find an old heavily used chainsaw, the drive cog on that thing will look like hell.

may have to buy this heated jacket / glove stuff yet.

which reminds me, saw an episode of "how it's made" and the product was an upscale pair of skiing goggles.

So high end they were, there was a small electric fan to provide ventilation that kept the goggles from fogging over.

reckon the bike crowd will have something like it eventually (fan was about the size of a 50 cent piece).
