Congrats as well from out west. On a side note, hope you and yours escaped the flood threats. I see this year's thaw has been brutal for you guys.

I was canoeing in 88 degree weather and saw a couple alligators. Wow, talk about two different worlds!

canoes and alligators, disposing of something or it "just happened that way?"

If I was in "gator" territory, I think a pistol would be on my person.

lus, ain't it a bit warm for canoeing?

Congrats!*

*Unfortunately, due to current economic conditions and budgetary constraints, your prize money has been reduced to only 40% of the usual award. This was a very difficult decision to arrive at and we truly appreciate your understanding in this matter.

Well the ex-wife was wondering why we needed a cinder block and short chain to go canoeing.

Naw, they don't mess with you. Their more scared of you than anything. That temp is just about right to canoe, I just made sure I didn't leave my feet in the water too long when I was trying to cool them off.

You know you're good with it and comfortable around them, when you are Wakeboarding...wipe out, and are relieved when you see eyes pop up next to you between the waves.

It's when you feel that big swoosh under your feet/board when you're floating there waiting for a boat to return is when you start to get a little nervous.

That and skiing/wakeboarding in Salt Water presents a whole 'nother obvious set of problems to worry about. Namely Bull Sharks. They're problematic because they're adapted to hunt in water with poor visibility. Like Tampa Bay, the Rivers, any of the Gulf side beaches. We have poor water quality around here. They're adapted to lash out or strike when they see a white flash (underbelly of a fish, or flash of sunlight off scale in murky water), an ill timed fall, (wrong place wrong time) or jumping in the water from a still boat to start your run, can obviously yields disastrous results because they see white skin, jewelry, or light colored bathing suit in a flash, and they strike. HammerPete can tell you about the sharks over at Sebastian Inlet/Jax Beach.

All in all...ask any local in the water though that's lived here a while...it ain't the big critters we worry about...it's warm water that scares most of us. When the water gets too warm it allows the breeding of microscopic creepy crawlies (viral, bacterial, and animal) that can be problematic, costly and more dangerous than any alligator. Both salt and freshwater. The Gulf temps can get up to 90 or so in the Summer and freshwater even Spring fed can get higher if there's an algae bloom or what not. There's been times I've wiped out, swam back to the boat, and worked up a sweat in the water.

The Floodway does it's job for us in the city so we're pretty safe. I can't say the same for the homeowners along the river in the Red River Valley or past the Floodway.
