The boxer motor GS models are shaft. The Rotax single cylinder (650GS) and the newer twin cylinder (650 and 800GS) motors are chain drive.

Also all of the CBR's break sprocket teeth a lot faster than any other bike in the group I ride with.
very interesting.

I would have thought breaking sprocket teeth to be a tendency on anything powerful.

that is most strange; and how long have you noticed this to be a problem.

if you don't mind me asking?

i know nothing about chain drives... but i didn't know that breaking teeth on a sprocket was a common occurance...

umm... either it isn't built well enough/tough enough... or there's something wrong...

sounds like somebody used an off the shelf part for a bigger bike than the sprocket was designed for.

Which reminds me, a guy at work had an older Ford pickup; had to replace a nylon gear which ran the camshaft. Perhaps not the wrong material, but not my first choice.

sometimes, they just make the wrong choices.

did any of the replacement sprockets go?

Well sure, that's logical.......if you ignore the 6 million or so OTHER Honda's on the road that DON'T have problems like that.

their replacement sprocket which is not OEM has not broken any teeth yet
.

don't take this personally, but something smells fishy.

The design may have been defective; or, it was an off the shelf part that didn't cut it.

under the heading of "things that happen when motorcycle people are not invovled in the motorcycle developement process."

amen.

just don't make 'em like they used to.

I would be most curious what all went wrong on the two magnas the guy had.

and curiously enough, my old ancient xs keeps plugging along; some minor problems, but the bike is 30 years old.

wonder how many bikes built in the last 5 years will be around 20 years from now.
