on the bike or not... clutch in, and front brake on...

then i release the brake... worst case is the brake stalls the motor... and i only start the bike when on the left side of it

It's always good IMO if possible to be two steps away from disaster in general, the first step here being the kickstand kill switch. Sitting on the bike is an option but the "clutch in, and front brake on..." while standing along side the bike is good enough for me.

It's good advice to be careful though.

How were you able to start the bike if it was in 1st? And why was your hand on the clutch? *confused*

I have a set routine that I follow every time.

Start bike,
Put in ear plugs
Put on helmet
Put on gloves
Kickstand
Switch fuel to on
Rock and Ride!

I can start my bike in 1st. As long as the kick stand is up, clutch in she will go.

It's nice to have a routine that works for you (so far) but keep in mind that everyone is different, and what works for you might not work for everyone.

Regardless of kickstand up or down my bike will ONLY start with the clutch in.

We can fix that with a pair of wire cutters.

never get on the bike before suiting up.
once on the bike, THEN you start it.

Pffffftttt. routines are for sissys. Random action keeps the adventure alive.

MSF? Pfffftttt what a waste of B.S. time.

I rarely start the bike while mounted. Ohhhhh, mounting make me think dirty thoughts.

The clutch in safety switch can be bypassed. A lot of Gixxer owners always want to bypass it for some reason. (And they claim it is better for the track.) But, on the newer ones, it will cause a fault on the bike and it will go into a "safe" mode and decrease power. The computer gets confused as it thinks that the clutch is in all the time. I really fail to understand the big deal as to why people would want to disengage the safety in the first place. (I know you were kidding. I am bored and just wanted to rant about something pointless.)

For those of us in the first stages of what must be Alzheimer's, we need routine. The other day, I changed my usual routine and as I got about a mile down the road I felt something smacking me on the shoulder. I then realized I did not fasten my chin strap on my helmet.

I can't answer that without getting political!!!

What some people consider safety others consider a nuisance!!!

I just don't really find it a nuisance personally. It is just not that big a deal to me. I geuss it is because I just do not think of it anymore. The sad part of this is that I cannot remember what my first bike was that required the clutch in to start.

Mine was a 1982 Suzuki GS1100GK.

My 1970 Yamaha 125cc was a kick start, my 1978 Suzuki 250cc was also a kick start both of them we would kickstart them drop into gear and ride off the kickstand.

A lot of the dual sport riders disconnect the clutch & side stand safeties too, it's pretty easy to get into situations off road where the safeties are a pain in the rear & can turn a minor tip over into a real problem.

Harley didn't start putting clutch & side stand safeties on there bikes till the 07 models.

and also for dual-sport since they're more likely to snap the clutch lever/cable... heh...
