| Hello, still being a noob I have done plenty of reaseach and am well on my way to my first bike in late November. I have my Saftey Course next month and I was looking at the gear they suggest you buy before hand, and on it were boots. I have looked at some but there huge and bulky. I will be riding the bike to school and what not. Whats a good cofortable boot that covers your ankle that could pass in daily interactions that wouldn't draw out attention? Is there such a thing? Does everyone here where boots or after the coursse do they go to street shoes. Thanks once agian in advanced everybody for your help. Jeff |

| I'm not familiar with Icon gear at all, but I have read a lot of complaints about their quality on various motorcycle sites.

| Clunked into first gear ![]() | If you're looking for race type boots and can afford to shell out the big bucks, I'd go with Sidi Vertebra. They make the best boots on the market. If you can't spend big $$ on boots look for some Alpinestars SMX3 or SMX boots. I have a pair and the only complaint I have involves my Teknic race leathers. The side zipper on the boot causes extra pressure on my ankle where the zipper for my leathers closes, other than that I like them. If you want casual I would look at the Icon street gear, but be forewarned, they absorb dirt like a Brawny papertowel! I sought out a closeout set of street boots from Harley Davidson called the Night Shift. They do the job and they are steel toed. Hope some of this helps.

| JefLaf even a sturdy work boot offers you quite a bit of protection. If you have a helmet, jacket and gloves and boots on your feet you can come out of most get offs in decent shape, I ride with full gear when I ride, it is hard for me to not take the protection issue seriously. I talk to riders everyday that have crashed, sneakers won't help you much if your foot is caught beween the bike and the road. While not comfortable for walking around I use motorcross boots when I ride, they give me protection right up to the bottom of my pucks and cost me about $180 the street style boots seem to be about twice the price with half of the protection..

| Maybe you should decide if you want riding only boots or dual duty boots or just some regular boots that cover you ankles??? If your just want some regular boots: Doc Martens, Timberlands, Hermans or Georgia Boots. Dual Duty boots: Icon and Honda are the only one's I've seen. Plus they don't look like motorcyle boots. Riding boots: Ahh what ever else the others said above. However don't go nuts and start buying apperal and protection before you take the class. In my MSF class these girls, sorry women, each bought HD sporters and boots and a whole bunch of other stuff with out having sat on a bike. Half way thru the MSF class each found out that the $100 plus dollar HD boots weren't comfortable and made it harder to shift gears. Since they were worn I'm not sure they could have exchanged them for other boots. For me I used my 8 year old DMs boots and my car repair gloves for the MSF class. Then after riding a bike for the first time I had a better idea of what I should get instead of what I think or the salesperson suggests I get. So just take your time, don't rush to buy anything you can't return. Otherwise you waste money on things that will collect dust in your closet. Cheers!

Maybe they're not that bad, but with so many other proven manufacturers out there - I'd go with something else.

| I ride in Icon gloves and love them. Thats the reason I looked to they're boots. Both sets of gloves felt like they were broken in after 2-3 trips. The styling was the original reason I bought them, but later I think they are of good quality. Don't know about the jackets. I want a leather jacket and was looking at the Daytona Hero jacket that Icon makes. If I do go get it, I'll let ya know.
