Default Is trading in a bike like trading in a car?

I want to get rid of my ninja. I was going to give up riding all together but am already feeling the itch. My thought is to trade my ninja in towards or on top of a new(ish) bike. I have wanted a V-star 1100 since I was 16 but am also looking at sport touring bikes or dual sports.

That aside would it be better to pay off my current bike and then trade it in or trade it in as is and let any negative equity stack onto the new loan. I could probably pay this bike off in the next month or two and try to sell it outright and break even or trade it in in the spring. I guess I'm really not sure what I want to do at this point. FWIW there is no way I can keep two bikes. I live in an apartment and it's streching it with two cars and a bike.
