Default Screws on Battery Leads

After a great deal of trouble yesterday with a dead battery (I now have a new battery) I have come to notice that the two screw that screw into the tops of the battery have absolutely nothing to screw into. There are no threads and thus really nothing holding a solid connection with the leads....... Surely there are just some missing nuts.... I sure hope so anyway.... Can a few of you who have messed with the battery a bit shed a little light on this please.....ex. How your connection is held, what do the screws actually screw into?

I'm taking my tank of tank and rear fender off today, wish me luck! (Anything I should watch out for?)
