Default Can't believe I let the smoke out

What is the first thing I, You, tell someone to do before they work on anything especially bikes. DISCONNECT THE BATTERY. What did I do. Left the battery connected when I removed the tank. I was disconnecting the wiring and fuel line when I moved the tank rearwards onto positive battery terminal. Well I now know how much smoke is trapped in the earth wire for the fuel pump. All the insulation was melted off the full length (about 10 inches)
I stripped the wrapping from the main harness and replaced the wire.

Then prayed.

Connected the battery....No smoke
turned the key....usual noises....no smoke
Checked lights etc...worked...no smoke

Prayed again

Pressed the starter.....It STARTED...no smoke....

All appears good havent ridden yet, still have to modify the wiring in the spots and cig lighter which is what I started out to do.

I thought there was some reason every service manual starts out w/ a warning label to unhook the battery first before doing any service work.
Glad you didn't have a total meltdown.

And you disconnect the NEGATIVE lead first.......and re-connect it LAST.

Didn't your battery have a big red plastic cap over the + terminal ?
That's a pretty good secondary safety device when the primary one (your brain) fails!

I was very lucky indeed. I think I must have pushed the tank into the red battery cover and moved it aside.

It happens, just hope you dont have the smoke escape while the bike is in motion, Had my reg/rec go up in smoke once with flame it was mounted to the battery box with the battery directly on top of it LOL . You dont want to warm the battery up to much as it could go bang, Found that a Can of coke is a good fire stopper.

Took the M50 for a short ride 44km (27 miles) and all is well. I can't believe how lucky I have been. The mods to the lights have worked well and am very pleased with the results. Picture is of the earth wire for the fuelpump/sender unit.

wow... i just worked on my bike the other day and almost dropped the tank right on the battery... doh...

i did have to clean up the positive terminal last year on the battery (looks like someone cross threaded the bolt hole) and i had to tap the hole again... i shorted the battery for a split second. i had the negative unplugged but the tap handle was long enough to touch it... i got lucky as well
