Default new tires

Is there anything I need to know about breaking in new tires?
Someone told me that the manufacturers put some type of sealant on new tires and it was very slick, and could use something to remove it? Any ideas?

Gonna put a`set of pilot roads on my vstrom

Thanks
Dan

No knee draggin for the 1st hundred miles. They need to be roughened up a bit, the tires that is.

IMHO, the best thing you can put on your new tires is some careful miles. They need to get warmed up and some road friction. I wouldn't trust any chemical you "put on" them to break them in.

If I have time, I will use steel mesh to scrap the slick stuff off prior to mounting the tire.

If I'm lazy, then I would just take it easy during the first 20 miles in twisties. Then progressively increase the lean angle until the chickenstrips are gone. Be gentle with the throttle and brake inputs for the first 60-70 miles. Keep in mind that the numbers above are all twisty miles. If you're doing just highway or street miles, then you might need to follow the tire manufacturer's guideline of 100 miles.

Pilot Roads are good tire. I never dragged knees on Pilot Roads but they last a heck of long time (in my case, about 12,000 miles on my SV650S).

I saw on another site a recommendation to scrub them down with carb cleaner. :X. Anyone hear of this???? Supposedly this is to get rid of some type of sealant the manufactures`put on them???. I think the whole thing could be a hoax

Any thought
Dan

I wouldn't put anything more than miles on them.

I need a new set this year myself.

Just don't do anything crazy the first 100 miles or so. I wouldn't be putting anything on them. I just changed mine a 2 weeks ago and didn't notice anything slippery or dangerous.

I wouldn't put any type of chemical on the tires. Some would actually glaze the rubber due to the dissolving action of the chemical.
I like curvy roads and generally put on a softer tire for the grip. I've never noticed any slippage with the new tires.
Just lucky I guess, but a harder rubber might be entirely different!

Well the pilot roads are suppose to be a softer compound. I'll just take it easy the first 100or so miles

Thanks all

Dan

Here's my two cents. The issue (or urban legend--not sure) is whether or not there is some kind of mold release agent on the tire. Personally they always LOOK wierd when you get them. I take it easy the first one or two heat cycles and then don't worry about it.

Heat cycle being heating up to operating temp...

Well the bike is getting fitted with her new shoes this week. I plan on doing a 100 mile round trip to break them in. First 30 being slab miles and then some 40-50 mile per hour twisties and then the finial leg goes to 20 to 30. Hopefully the roads will be dry.

The mold release agent is primarily silicone, and slippery. I sometimes spray down new tires with tire cleaner like Westleys Bleche White or Goof-off, but even if you don't it will wear off in 50-100 miles. But remember, it only wears off where the tread hits the road during those first 50-100 miles (faster on rough surfaces- I like a good 20 mile spin down a gravel road to clean the goop off), so no matter how many miles you have on them be careful the first few times you lean that puppy all the way over.
