Default Lane Splitting Question

As a person who generally avoids California for a myriad of reasons, I find that I'm rather ignorant regarding California's lane splitting law. Perhaps one of you can answer this question:

I understand it is legal, under certain circumstances, for a motorcyclist to "split" the lane with a car at a safe speed. But, is it also legal for a car to "split" the lane of a motorcyclist? In other words, can a car enter your lane space to either pass you or pull parallel?

If it is legal, I have to say that it would be kinda spooky!
