I live out in a rural area with plenty of great country back roads to ride and I don't need to use my motorcycle for commuting to work, etc. So, most of my riding is single lane country roads with some larger highways when they happen to be along the route I'm on that day. Today, however, I was going to visit some friends over in Asheville and did about 80 miles on I-40. As I rode along I noticed that both sides of the Interstate lanes were lined with those ridges where they use some sort of grinder to dig scallops into the roadway to serve as a warning to motorists who might doze off and start to drift off the road. These particular ridges were about a foot long and looked to be an inch or so deep I would guess from the view I could get passing by at 70 mph. This inch or so deep trench seemed to be about four inches wide, and as I said, it was sort of a scallop. I'm sure they do a really good job getting a cager's attention when they drift over them, but I'm wondering what it would be like on a motorcycle? Has anyone ridden over these ridges that I'm describing? Is it a major safety hazard on a motorcycle (it seems to me that it would be) or does it just bounce you around a bit until you drive back off of them? |
