Default questions from the youngster

I am starting to see how simple it is to do things that cost a lot to do at a motorcycle shop so.... i walked into a store and was going to get a simple stand. this guy walks up to me and says do i want the front or the back... do i want both, and what kind. i saw one that looked reasonable for about 100 per stand. I am not try to do rocket science but i just wanted to see what people say when All i am trying to do is maybe tighten my chain every once in a while, and oil change. thanks

You don't really need a stand for those things, but if you want to make life easier, just get a rear wheel stand.

I got the rear wheel stand for the GSXR (Bandit has a center stand ). I haven't used it yet, but my chain's still fine and what-not.

I plan on getting the front stand sometime this year (whenever I need it).

I went with the Pit Bull stands. They seem to be commonly accepted as a good stand.

Here's a tip: Wait 'til you start having to change out the tires. Ouch. Around here, they get $35 PER WHEEL ($25 per wheel if you bring in just the wheels).

I decided a long time ago that I was going to go broke paying that stupid shop to do stuff for me, so I started buying tools. Chain tools, tire mounting equipment, a big fan for when I set the valves on the Bandit (air cooled), I made my own carb synch tool, you name it . . . if I can save a few bucks I jump right in.

In fact, just for %%%%s and giggles, I call and get a quote on the service. Then when I pay $70 for a chain tool I know that using it twice makes it a deal. Money in my pocket.

. . . and I am by no means the sharpest tool in the shed, so if I can do it anyone can. Just stick with the forums and you can glean MOUNDS of useful information and save yourself some money in the process.

LOL Stands are expensive?

You're riding a 2007 Litre bike. It's like buying a Lamborghini and complaining about the gas mileage.

I love working on the stuff. Alot of the stuff like special tools, stands etc. you only have to buy once.

Then it's the count down like the meatman does. they are paid for the second time you take them out of the toolbox.

Believe it or not, I have found that each and every tool I have bought has "paid for itself" on the second use (as you indicated), so that is DEFINITELY a valid rule of thumb for the special tools and equipment I have purchased so far.

Problem I have is I keep changing bikes, so I have a ton of special tools and service manuals I don't use. I have to keep buying new ones for the new bikes. It never ends. But I have also saved a ton of money by doing all the work myself. Tools are always a good investment, if you buy good ones. Just as you cannot have too much power, you also cannot have too many tools.
