Default Intersections.

How do you treat them? Slow down at every one? Trust that your number isn't up and just ride through? Stop and walk you bike across?

I tend to get most nervous at intersections and I slow down and try to see if anyone is running the light. I'm not really sure what I'd do if someone were, I guess I just wanna see what's about to hit me.

What do you do?

If the light just turned green for my direction as I'm coming up to it, I usually try to slow a bit so it has been 2-3 seconds before I enter the intersection. This usually gives a chance for those last minute pedal pushers, to get through. However, if I have a clear view of the intersection and see all opposing traffic has stopped, I usually proceed normally. Do whatever feels most comfortable for you.

Check the light, watch for idiots, don't hit the gravel if you're turning, and hold the beer between your legs if you have to use the clutch.

I also tend to pace myself with other cars. Maybe they'll catch a redlight runner for me or at least if they can't see me, they might see the car with which I'm pacing. I also do this when I see someone wanting to turn left in front of me. (For any Brits/Aussies, that would be someone turning right across your path.)

That beer comment was pretty ignorant. Don't you have a cup holder? Trying to hold your beer (especially a 40!) between your legs while riding can cause an accident. Didn't you take MSF? Put your beer in a cup holder....

Sorry to be antagonistic, but I found your post to be quite irresponsible. Don't you know that they make beer helmets with holders in the top of the helmet like you see at ball games? The cups are carbon fiber and the tubes are encased in braided steel. Your hands never leave the hand grips.

Sheesh. Some people.

Are you saying that you are riding in a cars blind spot in the hopes of using that car as a barrier ?

I remember reading somewhere once where some "expert" recommended only going through multi-lane intersections in the left lane, and keeping a car on your starboard through the intersection as a 'blocker' of sorts. Not in the blindspot, even with the driver. Personally, I trust my own observations and reactions better.

No. That would be pretty ridiculous. I ride side by side. I also want to be able to see over his hood. I do all that I can not to ride in anyone's blind spot.

This is my method as well. Still, my eyes are the size of golf balls through every intersection that I go through. Talk about awareness...I'm as alert & aware as it gets when it comes to intersections.

Avoid intersections at all costs. ride in circles only. forget the beer holders. hook the keg up to a garden hose and away goes trouble down the drain.

With all the hijacking around these parts (and other shady activities) President Bush would get a boner.
