Default Almost hit someone yesterday

I was riding, minding my own business, when an extended cab, extended bed pickup truck pulls out to make a left turn across my lane. There was no middle island where he could have pulled to, so I don't know what he was thinking. The truck was so long it took up both of my possible lanes and most of the bike lane. The worst part was he wasn't even looking at traffic coming his way. I did some emergency braking, locked up the rear a bit but was able to stop until he could make the left turn. What a retard. Some people just shouldn't be on the road.

Good on ya brotherman for not getting into an accident. Its funny how the more I ride the more defensive I am.. If see a car ready to pull out on the highway I sometimes flash my brights at them to get noticed but I always get ready for them to do just what your describing. I even slow down some just in-case they are raring to pull out..

So I'm glad to see your ok.. I've even had to use the emergency lane a few times to avoid being hit..

People just don't see bikes..

That's the classic multi-vehicle crash scenario. You were invisible. Good job staying out of the hospital!

What's and extended bed? Is that the new 12' box?

Haha yeah it was a 4-door with a huge bed (it might have been 12 feet, heck I don't know). He'll probably never even use that amount of space hahaha. Here in California, guys like to get the biggest truck possible to commute to work. I don't understand it. I wonder if they just enjoy getting 8 mpg...that must be the reason for it.

Mmm mega cab with extended bed, argg. Gotta watch out for the trucks stay out of the blind spots, well that goes for all vehicles. I know the blind spot on my truck is rediculous and before changing lanes I need to look over my shoulder.

Good job keeping out of the guy.

Man, good job for avoiding an accident!

I must say, when I first read the title for this thread I thought you meant a person, not vehicle. My friend's pregnant friend got hit by a motorcyclist... I mean, how does that happen? I am on these forums with smart, conscious riders such as you and I forget that there are so many idiots on motorcycles out there as well!

The problem I hav ewith this scenario, is I often (in my cage) flash my lights to give folks the right-away to pull out in front of me. I wouldn't want the same reaction while on only two wheels.

This is really good advice.

They don't see bright yellow school buses with flashing lights or trains either....I never expect them see something as small as a motorcycle.

It was probably a full-size pickup truck 4-door and 8-foot bed.....

I was driving home yesterday, I was in the left lane and a HUGE pickup truck was hauling a trailer with three cars on it in the right lane.

The old lady in a car on the shoulder, decided to pull right on out and just put..put..put on down the road. I floored it so the truck could pull over in my lane and not kill the old woman, that looked like she just walked out of a piramid...cheeez!! probably someones grandmother!

Once you get to a certain age and physical condition, you should loose the privilage of driving.....maybe get free delivery of their groceries and medication!!!

I completely agree. I saw a man driving a truck a couple days ago...he was on a breathing machine that was sitting right behind his seat! What happens if the breathing machine fails and he passes out behind the wheel?

All the books/studies say it's the left turners that account for all the bike deaths/accidents. Which the numbers may support, but my most tense/aware moments come during the daily commute when traveling in the outside freeway lane. Sometimes it seems, mistakenly I'm sure, that I can sense when a car is going to jump out for a quick meaningless pass event, but there have been several non-serious surprises too. what I try to set up before coming broadside to a cager is to 'wander' slightly into the right side of the outside lane, flash the beams, then head to the left side of the lane to 'blip' past him, slowing when I reach the next space between the travelers. So far so good...But uncorking the thermos in the parking lot always seems like a happy graduation event.

this reminds me of a time once...............

I was drving the bike through a small town (where I grew up and my folks still live)......... and anway, these bunch of wanker kids decided they didn't need to hurry up at the cross walk at all (they walked slower) and I had to avoid them because "they had something to prove."

Just about stopped and took'em on.
