Sounds like you've made a decision, but I think it's the wrong one.

My wife has the car, and I've got the bike. When there's snow on the ground I use the BMW (bus metro walk) to get around. In warmer weather I use the bike constantly. Tailbag, tankbag, and I'm good for everything I could possibly need to pick up.
I assume you are suggesting just getting a bike and I'll be fine with just that?

Exactly. My household already has a car -- usually used by the wife as she goes to work and takes the Hordling to daycare. We use it for the big grocery shop, and any other bulky transport. And if I buy something very big, I'll just pay the $50 to have it delivered.

Day to day, I ride the bike -- and I've got enough room in my bags to carry 4L of milk, eggs, fresh fruit... along with the change of clothes for the office.

If I ever got really screwed and absolutely, positively, needed to have four wheels on a day my wife had the car, I'd just take a cab or something. (Probably join a car-sharing service next winter, actually.)

Just think outside the box/cage!

Barbarian, you forgot the other option; a bike trailer. Then you don't need to pay for delivery; got to take the bike out and fetch your stuff.

Trailer could be an option -- but I'd rather travel on the lighter side.

the trailer wouldn't always have to be on the bike.

The trailer would be on the bike about once a week; say for groceries or what have you, a run to the hardware store.

It completely depends on the situation/weather/avg commute.

I ride 10 miles to work each day in houston, rarely hit rain (though winds are insane today) and I have dealt with the cold, and now it doesnt bother me. Im single and knocking out my debts, so 6 bucks a week in gas and my roomate having a car (who works at home and always wants to get out) makes it a natural choice for me to have a bike, at least for a few years.

In South Carolina you shouldn’t have a major problem most of the time… Until I had to wait for a part (keeping two bikes running isn’t a guarantee that either of `em will be there when you want…) I commuted through the middle of January – I’d borrow the family car on ice-days (and crazy enough to do 75 miles one way on ice…), but normal rain-gear and `lectric lingerie got me through the rest quite nicely – yer right it saves a ton of money – in my case about $14 a day between saved gas and parking fees…

Well I did it and got a '08 Kawasaki 250r. I have been commuting back and forth to work rain or shine. I'm sporting a rain suit and the bike is great on gas mileage, 70-75 mpg. I'm enjoying the ride and my wife and I are able to work it with just a bike and a car.

After I pay off some bills I'll be able to save for a bigger bike. It’s up in the air on what I may get but I have time to think about it. Shiny side up!

Life's always a compromise; what you want, and what you can afford.

You're going to get spoiled with the fuel economy, at least from what I'm hearing about predictions with gas prices.

I'll buy that one when you're ready to upgrade It just figures that I go out and buy a brand new bike and they re-design it and make it look 10x better the next friggin year
