| Interesting replies here...ranging from sensible to ...words fail me. There musta been 30 or more bikes pulled up at the accident I saw. No cars pulled up mind you. There was alot of sombre faces, probably all thinkin it coulda been them just as easily. So many reasons as to why it happened, let alone what he was wearing to protect himself. I guess not alot of you get to see the actual outcomes of the accidents. I've seen it from road to Emergency Dept to Operating Theatre to Intensive Care to hospital unit to rehabilitation ward. It effects so many people than you would think besides friends and family. The pain, the needles, the change in body image, chronic injuries. In the end I'd just ask everyone to use what that guy above mentioned and use the best prevention possible..that thing between your ears...

| Does not play well with others. ![]() | in all reality i haven't lost my mind. i prefer slight insanity over reality but when it comes to riding i don't screw around with it. My dad was an EMT for 30ish years and I know he's seen everything. He rides full gear all the time no matter the weather. What is good enough for him is good enough for me. After my uncle hit a deer on his goldwing he looked into full helmet and woke both of us up a little. (and no i didn't take this as a personal attack... just explaining my position on this subject)

| I have never been seriously injured on the street. 100K+ miles and counting. And I'm not religious about gear on the road. However I've got a laundry list of broken bones and such from a 30 year pro racing career. I'm sure I shocked and appalled some of the safetycrats, but I'd rather have sound technique and common sense than all the equipment in the world. By the way does anyone remember the babe-cage?

| Hey Eric you need to come to the next VDTRA race. It is the closest one to you except Springfield. You barely have to drive into Texas from the north.

| babe cage is silly IMO.. the last thing I'd want is to be trapped in a cage on a bike as it goes down. I would figure it would be better to be thrown out and away from a 400 lb machine as it was tumbling down the road..

| Found second gear by accident ![]() | Full face, either leather armored jacket or armored mesh jacket depending on the weather, gloves & boots...normally jeans, unless it is a longer ride, then I'll wear cortech jeans with pads.

| Newbie | I ride in a half helmet when I'm on short trips like the 5-10 miles to work and around town. Full face if I hit the highway for any reason. Have a nice armored jacket for the winter. Summer usually wear a leather jacket. Jeans... Icon Moto armored gloves... Steel toe boots when not working. On work days desert combat boots. Military requires long pants, long sleeves, gloves, dot approved helmet, boots or over the ankle shoes, and reflective gear at night. Before the military I used to ride in whatever I was wearing, but since I've been in I've seen some pretty screwed up things and after I'm out I don't plan to stop wearing ATGATT

| I wear my Gear every time I ride, I do not take chances and besides after reading the stories of accidents it makes me stay more alert when I am on the Road. My life is too important to be Stupid. 2005 Roadstar 1700 Maroon |

| Yanno, getting ready to ride now is definitely not what it used to be! When I first started riding, armor was something only worn in the dark ages while slaying dragons and heathens. The best riding protection was a studded, multi-zippered, black leather "Eisenhower" jacket and Levis. Riding boots were black, RedWing or Dingo "Engineer" boots and the finest-helmet-on-earth was the very heavy Bell "ear cover" racing lid. Now I admit it takes a lot longer to "suit-up" before I get to ride. However, that being said, I'm grateful for the excellent gear we have now versus the make-do stuff we had then. High-siding your bike at 50 mph then, if you lived, nearly guaranteed a trip to the hospital for the concussion, broken bones and a very spa-like road rash scrub . The scars and resulting disability were usually with you, in one form or another, the rest of your life. An awful lot of older bikers in those days walked with a limp and had skin like a moonscape. So, despite the inconvenience of putting on one's modern gear and the sometimes excessive warmth during the summer, I fail to grasp the reasoning behind why anyone would ride without a decent helmet, basic armor, boots, gloves and skin protection. But then I guess I'm just an old-fashioned wuss. Or maybe those who ride without protection are just smarter, luckier and way better riders than we were. Yeah, that must be it! B-Rex |
