Unhappy Trouble Starting

Hey all,

Question for all experienced bike owners.

I'm having trouble getting my '82 Yamaha XJ750 Maxim started.

I knew it was having trouble - probably carbs need cleaning/adjusting or fuel line, because it's a bit troublesome starting generally, and when running idles extremely high (with choke out a bit) or to the point of stalling out (with choke in all the way).

The other day was the ususal sweet-talk it til it starts up, let it idle low with the choke open completely, then gingerly begin to add a little throttle until it kicks in. Usually once I go through this process it runs fine and starts right up the whole rest of the day.
This time, however, we did the usual slow idle dance, I gave her some juice ('cause she likes to run once I get her going), but about a quarter mile down the road she sputtered and stalled out. I've not been able to get her going since (couple days ago).

Yesterday I got a low idle out of her, but didn't run for long. When I gave her throttle, she sputtered out.

Today - nothing. I hear the weezing of the starter motor going, but no fire, no rev, no juice.

Any thoughts for getting her going without calling in a pro or doing a complete carb overhaul?

Thanks for taking the time.
