Here's a pretty good short interview with Erik Buell regarding the 1125R:

Default Great Mill

Nice pics and article!

I don't have much experience with Buells but have I have a fair amount of time on Rotax engines. I've flown several of their engines in sportplanes. If the Buell's Rotax is anything like their aircraft mills, this is going to be one terrific machine (I do realize a bike is more than just its engine). Rotax has made their reputation by building very reliable, high horsepower-to-weight ratio engines.

I find it interesting that Buell chose a light, water-cooled Rotax to replace the old technology, heavy, air-cooled Sporty engine. That's exactly what happened in the sportplane industry when light, water-cooled Rotax engines replaced the old technology, heavy, air-cooled Lycomings and Continentals. In those days it was considered a radical departure from the then current airplane engine philosophy that simple (read radiator-less) mills were superior and more reliable. Rotax has permanently fixed that misconception for small planes.

So, with that new, aircraft-derived engine, I do expect that new Buell to "fly".

It's only for the 1125R. They still run the old air cooled mills in the other models.

A frien of mine bought one a month ago. I already tried it in the local canjons.
It is a much better bike than his previous "lightenning", it handles really, really well, I would say more like, or even better than a normal japanese bike. it still vibrates though. All and all I liked it. My only concern is that it is an expensive bike, he paid like 15 000 for it and all the bike is doing is resembling a japanese bike more than it did before... He said that he was considering the new Ducati, /same money/ but he is really into Buells, so he ended up with it. He says that he likes Bueels because they are more interesting to ride, sort of keeping you on the edge /my translation- harder to ride/ and dislakes the japanese bikes because they are boring and dull -very submissive. I think this is a strong trend among Buell folowers, and a school of thought that justifies owning a Buell. For my money I wouldn't own one, even the new one.
maybe next model and maybe if the price is lower.

Who wants to show this "friend" how submissive a Japanese bike can be? Something tells me a 1000 CC Suzuki inline four can take an 1100 CC V-Twin.

Plus, at $15000, your friend paid too much. The MSRP is only $11995

I'm sorry about "submissive" I am perefrazing the conversation.
English is not my language, and at the time I was practicing my russian with this friend of mine /his parents are russians, actually I used to work with his dad, and for some reason we always converce in russian/
He paid more because he ordered the bike delivered, he mentioned that he got the first bike for L.A., special order, something of the sort.
He's a nice guy helps me a lot with my bike, and whatever help I need.
Once I lended him my old 600 for few weeks when his lightenning was in the shop, /riding a bike is his only mean of transportation/, and even then he said that he didn't enjoy the gixxer, that it was boring.

I just sold a 2000 Buell M2. It was a versatile torquey ride. The M2 was more a standard than sport bike, but handled well and was a lot of fun on winding roads. It went on a 2500 mile ride to Colorado Springs, CO and it performed well getting 55 to 60 mpg. I would buy another one. (too many others I want first though) I bought it new in Nov 99 for $9000.

Sounds like a good friend to have chrisan.
But, gosh, that $15k still sounds a little steep.
I'll bet a little patience could have saved him a few thousand dollars.
But, hey, he's happy and he got the bike he wanted so who am I to comment, right?

Peace.

It'll definitely turn a few heads at the stoplight, that's for sure.
