Indian Larry' hurt on stunt in Cabarrus

Builder of custom motorcycles airlifted from county arena

A custom-motorcycle builder known to Discovery Channel viewers as Indian Larry was seriously injured while performing a stunt Saturday at the Cabarrus Arena and Events Center.

Cabarrus County officials said the stunt driver sustained head injuries and was in critical condition after being airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center. A CMC official couldn't confirm his condition.

Indian Larry has been featured on Discovery's Biker Build-Off television series and was at the arena to perform stunts during the three-day Liquid Steel Classic and Custom Bike Series.

"He was riding and standing up on his seat," said Mike Downs, Cabarrus County deputy county manager. "The bike started to wobble and he was not able to regain control."

Indian Larry fell off the bike before a crowd of about 8,000. He was not wearing a helmet. Paramedics were standing by at and aided him until he could be airlifted to CMC, Downs said.

The show continued, but all other stunts were canceled, Downs said.

Indian Larry is known for his eccentric nature, according to his official Web site. His résumé includes movie, video and television.

I saw his stunts on TV. Always thought he is insane. He never had any gear on. But he had plenty of tattoos - they don't protect you when you hit concrete.

He is the typical "I'm invincible" type of rebel guy. The problem is that he was many times on TV, probably inspiring others to follow his reckless style.

Finally he got owned by his own stupidity. That is what happens when you are looking for it!

Man, that sucks!! I watched all of those discovery shows. Indian Larry is like the combo stunter/Harley guy...I think he mostly did just the standing on the seat trick. The thing is...if you're going to try to do that kind of stuff, you at least have to have a helmet and some leathers on!!!

...I hope he's okay!!

This is so sad! I just saw another special on him Friday. Indian Larry is as tough as they come, but a fall like that with no helmet... I just hope he pulls through...

Okay, I just about got booted from another forum for expressing my views, but I gotta' say it:

We come here and preach safety all of the time. Now, "Indian Larry" dies . . . while doing a helmetless stunt . . . and all of the posters at the forums are saying, "Poor Indian Larry. At least he died doing something that he enjoyed. He wouldn't have wanted it any other way. Etc, etc."

Suddenly, my fellow posters (not directed at anyone in particular) all feel sorry for someone that IMO was the epitomy of motorcycling stupidity. "Helmets be damned!! I'm a helmetless stunter that rides a less-than-adequate machine. Look kids!! THis is how a real man rides his bike!!"

Sorry, folks, but to me he's like the guy that wouldn't stay behind cover in a war zone. He's not a hero, he's just anohter dead dumba$$ that wouldn't heed to common sense.

Have to agree with Landry...

A real stuntman is trained to make things look dangerous while taking every precaution to ensure that they remain safe.

Even us "every day heros" (firefighters), who are there to save lives and property of others, are taught that the top priority is your personal safety. We go into burning buildings because we are trained how to behave, and because we are wearing protective clothing from head to foot. I would never enter a burning building without my gear - and I would never stand! on the seat of a moving motorcycle without wearing full gear.

No one is invincible - as soon as you think you are, you're already dead. (to misquote someone's sig here).

blah blah blah. It seems whenever something tragic happens , a lot of you like to bash them for being a dumba$$. Well that was his choice to go helmetless and 8000 people were enjoying it . Do you think he was setting a bad example for the kids today, well you better lock up your kids and cut the cable tv because there is a lot worse on the tube. I would have to imagine that poor old Larry (btw..he's still warm) understood the risks of what he did as do all the extreme atheletes that got so much praise here a couple of weeks ago. I enjoy watching the chopper shows and they make " the ride" look so cool, with their bandanas and beater shirts on but I still wear leather and a helmet.

Deep sea fisherman (most dangerous occupation in the world)
Dale Earnhart (no head harness...dumb a$$?)

Mark - No flaming from here... I can appreciate him for who he was and what he did. However, you are right, he CHOSE to ride unsafely. While it's tragic as well as ironic that that was the result of his demise, in the end, it is just that: Tragic. It's sad that he's gone, regardless of the reason. In addition to being a unique person, he was something of a "figurehead" and an "icon" in the motorcycle world. He was the epitome of "Ride Till I Die!". But he also knew the risks when he took them. That was his choice, God rest his soul. And too, this brings home that no matter how long you've been riding, no matter how good you are, when you ride unsafe you make your own risk that much greater.

I think the point of my post has been missed. It's obvious that he was a dumba$$. My post dealt with the hypocrisy of posting every day about gear, safety, etc., and then when a PERFECT EXAMPLE of what not to do dies doing exactly that (what we all know not to do), everyone's all sorry about it.

trappercase: Your reasoning is flawed. The Mt. Everest climber is only a dumba$$ if he refuses to heed the warning and take some friggin' gear with him. If he dies with the gear on, at least I can respect him as a smart man looking for a challenge, not a 'look-at-me' dumbass toying with the odds until they feed him his a$$ on a plate.

Everest climbers do it for the thrill and all of the experianced ones do it without supplemental o2. Proper gear or not you have a better chance of living riding a chopper stark naked standing up than climbing everest. My reasoning is not flawed... maybe my example is. My point is that I am sure that Larry didn't think that his head was harder than the concrete it landed on. He just found it thrilling as do the everest climbers whohave something like a 10% chance of dying.
