To start off i really don't know where i should post this but i hope the mods are not mad . Just like the subject says i'm a super newbie. I know nothing about bikes and all the other good stuff you bikers out there know. Well to start off i wanted to start getting into bikes because I heard that car insurance and motorcycle insurance is different. I am getting into bikes because car insurance has denied insuring me any further, Mainly because of racing,accident, and speeding. My records show 7 points so far. I hope that the following questions can be answered by someone out there. First off I would like to know : how do i get a motorcycles lisence , second: is motorcycle and car insurance seperate ? if not then i'm really screwed , because now i've got to walk or even worst, TAKE PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION.

Getting a motorcycle license depends on where you are from.

As for insurance, although they are different, here in Quebec both are based on the same driver license (the license just mentions what you can drive: car, emergency vehicules, motorbikes, taxis, trucks, or mopeds). So the insurance companies have the info on you. I'm pretty sure that with your driving record, IF you were able to get insured it would cost you an arm and a leg and maybe even your 2nd arm.

Can't really help you there, there are consequences to every action. Some consequences are just funner than other.

You seem young, so take it easy for a while so that you can enjoy the life ahead of you.

Unfortunately for you Louis is right, of course depending on where you are the rules might be different but usually they add the motorcycle endorsement to your current drivers license.

Matter of fact up here in Canada if you were to fail to stop at a stop sign on a bicycle you would get the same fine and demerit points on your drivers licence, if you don't have a drivers license they''ll keep them in reserve until you do get one then apply the demerits retroactively.

If you're just looking for a mode of transportation to replace the car you can't insure, try a tamer car maybe the insurance compagnies will be more open.

BTW most states require you take a MSF course to get your MC permit.

99% of the insurance companies are going to go by your drivers license/record to determine your rates along with your age, etc.. No offense but from the sounds of your record you don't need a bike! All of the reasons you list for not being able to afford insurance will get you killed on a bike. If all of the points and the accident came from one bad mistake/incident then it's not as bad, but it's still not a great idea.

Your options are pretty much pay more in incurance than the car is worth to a high risk company, take the bus, buy a moped (no license required in most areas if under a certain cc), or the longshot, still technically a "moped" is the Derbi a 50cc sportbike from Spain. Finding one might be a little tough though so eBay would be a good starting point.

1. Here in Florida to get your liscense, you study the manual, take the test, free of charge, pass the test and you get a permit that is good for 60 days that can be extended up to 3 more times, for a total of 180 days on a permit only.

2. Florida seperates its insurance(s). Automobile and Motorcycle or two seperate "beasts" and they have the ability to rate you differently, based on the one you are trying to get.

If you have 7 points and you are trying to get insurance through the major carriers, why not try a local or mom and pop setup. Sure, the rates maybe a helluva alot higher, but you stand a better chance of getting coverage. Make some calls and let us know what happens.

Hey i really apreciate all of your helps guys. I'm gonna take your advice and make some calls. BTW i'm located in californina. I was also looking into getting one of the Suzuki GSX-R series. My probation officer says those are good bikes. He also owns a GSX-R 600.

If you want insurance forget about the GSX-R's, they're probably the most expensive to insure even with a perfect driving record.

You have a point there. They are ONE of the most expensive. I wouldn't say that are the MOST expensive one to have insurance on.

Your probation officer wants to you to get yourself killed, or do something dumb that will get you reinstitutionalized. Either way, it appears to me that he's tired of dealing with you.

man i havn't been online for so long well. i've made some calls and it turns out that i have to go take a test which will entitle me to a permit that will last for 12months. during the 12 months i will have 3 chances to make an appointment with the CHP to take the test on their special course. If i pass i get an M lisence. also i was recently offered a 1999 Honda CBR600F4 for 2500. i was wondering if this was a good bike to learn on ? and i really apreciate all you guys help. thanks again for your feedback guys.

Welcome to the forum and welcome to biking. I'm not so sure if you are into this "for the right reasons" If you are only thinking about riding as opposed to walking I suggest you start old, used and cheap. Just basic transportation. That way you can figure out if riding is for you. You may put a year or two on an older smaller bike and come to love riding. Then if you upgrade to something newer or faster you might have made it to a cheaper insurance bracket (takes three years for points to fall off in PA)
either way start cheap.

Also I don't like your P.O. I think he's trying to get you killed. GSX-R's are good bikes but think about your current driving experience and remember, on a bike, at 80MPH there's nothing between you and the ground but air. So if you do buy a bike please get riding gear. That's another cost thats usually overlooked.

I agree with saleemas, he's brought up good points, as for the cbr it's in the same class as the gsxr. The R's stand for racing, these are actual racetrack bikes with lights added, not the best learning tools and very expensive to insure ( if you can get insurance for it ).
